do you get local channels as well

Seems like this query was missed, my apologies. There're no local channels on Nilesat as the satellite is intended for the MENA region. However, local channels are currently receivable as FTA on NSS12 @57E Ku-band, Eutelsat 5 West A (c-band, KTN only), Eutelsat 10A @ 10E c-band, Intelsat 902 @62E c-band and Intelsat 904 @60E.

The Kenyan DTT / DVB-T2 signals are available on Intelsat 22 @72.1E but these require specialized receivers with multistream capabilities (hence not receivable with ordinary DVB-S2 decoders) some of which are mentioned here.

@ Rankaz, thanks for your tips here. I had my FTA installed last month and I'm able to get the CNN,Bloomberg and the EuroNews channels.

I also bought the JSC Irdeto Sports card and it's joyful viewing, only that there is no Formula 1 in that package. My challenge is that the picture cracks or the signal disappears whenever there's strong wind or slight rain.

Also, i can't catch the Al Jazeera sport +1,+2,+3,+4 & +5. (I'm able to access AJ+6 to +10 and all the HD channels) .

My dish is 130cm
My decoder is the Astrovox VSR9000 Premier HD
I'm on Mombasa Road, near City Cabanas area.

I would be grateful if you could offer me some advice on how to eliminate the cracks in picture and loss of signal.

Glad you appreciate. A few queries:
1. What LNB type are you using?
2. What cable type?
3. What is the distance, in meters, from the LNB to your decoder?

From lyngsat.com it looks as though the +1 to +5 channels are available only on the North West African beam which is a bit too far for us to catch.

Still, you can use the information available from dishpointer.com to fine tune your set up. This you can attempt by checking on elevation, azimuth and lnb skew in an attempt to maximize your signal reception. You may use either the Dubai One tp or the CNN tp to guide you in this.

There have been previous reports of compatibility issues between the JSC sports card and Astrovox as well as SkyBox F3 decoders but I do not think this could be the problem in your case, or else you would be unable to open any of the channels.

Indeed, I'm using both the Astrovox and SkyBox F3 and I'm able to watch all the other AJ Sports channels.

I'll pass the info about dishpointer to my installer and see whether there will be any success.

Thanks again bro.

YAOJIN 1807 decoder from Jolini brings you all these when in Nairobi but note that as soon as you move further away from the outskirts on Nairobi, some channels may not show. All these channels and plus others will show in the whole country in due course.

I have seen several diy post about installing the free to air satellite, I would like to take this up as a project, a small challenge that will probably keep me busy for the time being.

where in Nairobi can I get the needed equipments, i.e the right size dish, decoder and the other tu gadgets for checking signal strength and stuff.

Walk around the general neighborhood of Luthuli Avenue and get into shops such as Riwara, Spikes Spares and Electronics, Mwalimu Communications, Alpha Sounds, etc.

In general, you'd require;
i. Decoder. Strong SRT-4922HD currently going for around 6.5-7k.
ii. Satellite dish. Cost depends on type (whether prime focus or offset) and size.
iii. C-band and Ku-band LNBs. Different brands exist, make sure you buy one right for your dish. In general, the feedhorns for offset and prime-focus type lnbs are different.
iv. Cable. Always aim at grade RG6 cable and above. In general, cable run from lnb to decoder should not exceed 30m or else an in-line amplifier will be necessary. Approx cable cost is 35-45bob/m.
v. DiSEqC switch, generally costing 1-1.5k.
vi. F-connectors. Usually cost around 10bob each.

If you want a satellite signal finder/metre, please go for one that is at least able to decode DVB-S2 signals of at least 32APSK. Unfortunately, such are not available in Nairobi (a good example being SatLink WS-6918P) and one would have to import, preferrably from China, at a general cost of at least US $ 300. Have a look here for general idea on prices.

All the best pal.

Ahsante sana, managed to complete the set up with a 90cm offset dish, srt 4922 receiver and inverto single lnb, currently pointed to the 7w nilesats.

You're most welcome pal. Are you able to get the CNN/Bloomberg tp (11977v) and the EuroNews tp (12015v)?

no, those two tps proved hard to get - I got a flicker of green on (11977v) but could not get it at a stable point, guess i will need a bigger dish than my 90cm

Comrades, i want to nail any TP on this bird, which frequency is easy to receive, i've checked Satstar.net and i am hopeful. My LNB has been out in the Sun for 4 years, hope its still good enough for the duty.

Begin with the Dubai One tp (11785) and Fox (11295).

Hello. For EPL, you'll have to get an AlJazeera Sports card (yearly subscription costs about the same as what you pay for supersport on dstv) coupled to a decoder of your choice such as Strong SRT 4922, SRT 4950, Skybox F3, etc.

Currently I do not know of anyone in Nakuru who I can refer you to. Kindly check on the link below and see if there's someone near you who may assist. It is a forum where we meet to discuss principally FTA satellite stuff and we gave some members from countries as varied as Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Ethiopia, etc.

I know someone selling Openbox S10 (ksh5,500) and Skybox F4S (ksh7000).
These are capable of receiving all FTA satellite channels and are easily configurable.

That's true, they work ok and picture quality is good. Those two are actually like twin brothers and I think they both run on the same basic software with a few subtle differences.
