General Franco used some in Spain, not necessarily the judas machine. E.g. one that went round your neck and crushed in your adams apple as a screw was tightened.

FUN FACT: the guillotine was considered as an instrument of equality. All people, whether commoners or noblemen, could be executed in the same exact manner. Not like before, where commoners would be drawn and quartered while noblemen got a 'quick' beheading.
