@AlphDoti did you really go through the TIME list, what position is Britney Spears on the list? In your case, is the source a historian as you claim or an author?

@muganda yes I read it. I said TIME reports is work of author.

They said they decided not to use the approach used by historians. Instead, aggregated opinions. They said ranked figures just as Google ranks web pages, getting data from e.g. Wikipedia, scanned books and Google.

The other approach by historians use principle assessment of the individual's achievements. They give reason for every person that they list.

Picture this: an American in America, writing a book, with over 2 million Christians on Earth, or 6 million Jews, not a Pakistani, not a Bangaldeshi, or Arab.
Most of his market were the Americans, Christians and Jews. And he is telling them, Muhammad (s.a.w) is the greatest man, the most influential man in history.
And the shocking thing about his list is this, that his own lord and saviour is number three. And he gives his reason for that, he says you see the honours of Christianity is to be divided between Paul and Jesus Christ (pbuh).

He says the real founder of Christinity is not Jesus Christ, but saint Paul. Paul wrote more books in the new Testament, out of 27 books out of which more than half (14) are written by this one man called Paul. He was the self appointed apostal of Jesus, he was not one of the disciples of Jesus Christ (pbuh). And everything that a Christian is preaching, is not the preaching of Jesus, but the teachings of Paul.

IMPORTRANT
If you look at facts and history, when people were first called Christians was several years after Jesus (peace be upon him) in Acts 11:19-26. It was after Paul had gotten some group of people and returned from Antioch when people started pointing at them and say those Christians.

Take your time @AlphDoti. Do not hypothesize, mixing opinions and facts. Both texts are available so no need to insert your bias.

Neither of the lists is the work of a historian.

If you read TIME 100 well, you'll see it is not the opinion of one person:
- TIME 100 most significant figures in history has been published only once
- Is not the same as Time People of the Year
- Evaluation based on aggregation of computation data from various sources to create ranking algorithim like google does
- Ranking adjusted for significance as opposed to fame

Similarly, I have read chapter of Michael Hart's book where author notes Jesus, as unquestionable in religious influence. For Muhammad's influence 700yrs later however, he considers:
....... religious effect (like in the case of Jesus)
...... + secular effect (like Alexander the Great/ Genghis Khan)
Difficult to argue this point.

I'm equally encouraged by Michael Hart's description of the book as his own perspective of history, with influence being sole criteria of ranking. He describes the book as 'his own answer' and emphasizes the list is of 'most influential persons in history, not a list of the greatest'

Looking at the likes of Osama Bin Laden, Michael Hart might be right that he is the most influential, I mean all these Islamic extremists quote Muhammad!!!!

The author is Michael H. Hart, descibed as an economer and a mathematician. This American, he goes out of his way to search in History for the 100 most influencial men, from time immemorial upto current time (that was 1978). And he gives us the list of those 100 most influencial men according to his view.

He gives reason for every person that he listed, why he chose this as number 1, why he chose that as number 2, why he choose this as number 30 etc. He gives you reason. And the amazing thing about his list is that number 1 in his list, guess... it's Muhammad (salalahu aleihi wa salaam).
