Rest in piece. We mourn with Edward & other siblings. Have grace.

Hate Kikuyu's = hearsay
Mau Mau war to reclaim land = fact
Mau Mau efforts earned independence = hmmmn

It is human nature to want to link Mau Mau and independence. While the two are correlated in my opinion, the causative factors for nations gaining independence must include World War II, bankrupt British empire, emergence of US/USSR superpowers, 'wind of change' etc.

So while decolonization involved civil conflict in Kenya, Rhodesia, many countries even in East Africa gained independence through peaceful disengagement. Hence the key ingredient for independence in a British protectorate was not a war.

Last I checked the Mau Mau fought for independence n land. But mainly WIYATHI, coz those days kyuks lived like caged animals, in concentration camps. Who would give a f*** about property while living in a cage? . Whether some kenyans want to twist this historical fact won't change anything.

They did fight for both land and freedom. But the gun never really drove out the white man. They had by and large been crushed by 1957. If this is what Prof said, I'd have no problem with him. But, while they never directly drove out the colonialists, I am at a loss as to the impact of the rebellion on independence date. I belonged to the school that fronts the notion that violent resistance made mzungu stay. But historical texts point to a possibility of a group led by Captain Briggs intending to do a UDI like in Zimbabwe

Motivated by land and independence. One as a core greviance, the latter as a developing request. But the Mau Mau, our blessed forefathers, lost the war.

Yet took the prize thanks to unstoppable 'wind of change' that rewarded all East and West; more so those who never bore arms.

Correction @muganda, Kenya wasn't a protectorate. It was a colony as from 1920. @kiterunner, the KLFA never started the battle and Kenyatta joined later. The fight wasn't just fought with guns. There was Kenyatta's group which thought, like Nyerere, that boardroom discussions and petitions would win freedom. But there were others like Kagia who thought it was time to take up arms

@muganda, The settler popultion in Kenya was very politically active. There is possibility, as alleged by some, that they were not willing to leave and intended to do an Ian Smith.
