Road to Garbatulla

Hi,

I plan to make a trip to this part of the country early January 2014. Anyone knows the state of the road to Garbatulla from Meru? Google maps tells me its 167.9km from Meru town but 5 hours 18 mins away. This doesn't make sense to me.

I would also like to know about security? Hotels? Rates?

Last i checked, going to that area code is like taking a low flight over Juba at the moment using a radial engine.Shame on you Shame on you

I thought you get to Isiolo first then take the "highway" to wajir? It shouldn't be too far from Oslo city aka texas.

Exactly! You take the road to Marsabit from Isiolo which I believe has been recently being built. From the map it looks very near.

WACHENI UWONGO!!!!!!

The last time i was there (Sept 2011), and i have been there hundreds of times, the best, safest and smoothest route was Meru-Kangeta-Maua-Kinna-Garba Tulla route.

So,
- Meru-Kangeta- junction 2km to Maua = 65km Tarmac (1.5hrs very hilly)
- Maua-Junction along the road to National Park to Kinna = 70km Tarmac
(1.5hrs hilly)
- Kinna Junction along road to park - Kinna = 10km murram road (0.5hrs)
- Kinna-Garba Tulla = 15km very bad road (2hrs)

Did you ask about HOTELS????
FORGET ABOUT THAT! Lodgings were very dirty small rooms, not unless they have improved now.

Taking the Isiolo-Garba route was like committing suicide, 120km but you use 6hrs, plus Turkana, Samburu, Meru, Somali and Borana bandits! Our car was one hit by 2 bullets luckily no one died but 1 engineer was hit on the hand.

Bullets is if use the 120km Isiolo-Garbatulla route and strictly speaking, its between Isiolo and Kula Mawe where the many tribes are mixed. The Meru-Maua-Kinna-Garbatulla route is very safe.

Was in Garbatula early this year..Used the isiolo route from isiolo used the wajir highway and it very rough though we din't experience any Bullets as the security at isiolo said the place was safe at the time, Though you may need a 4 by 4 for the road from isiolo to Garbatula

Its always good to avoid that route since you never know when they will strike. The section between Kachulu-Sharp-Kula Mawe was extremely bad! Only Lorries and proper 4X4 (i.e Landcruisers and Landrovers) can make it there.

Dunkang is very right. It's 90Kms from Maua-Mulika lodge junction with roughly 60kms all weather road but you can't compare it to Isiolo-Garbatulla road.It's 120Kms of pure terror and if it rains,you are royally landed on......Anyone been to Modogashe?? (A further 100 kms from GB)

I have been to almost everywhere in Isiolo, Wajir, Marsabit, Samburu, Mandera Counties, and Partially Garissa.
