I consider myself a techno-conservative, hence I've never subscribed to any PRS service, not one. I recently began receiving spam messages from a shortcode 2554, so I naturally called Safaricom asking to stop.

Imagine my surprise when they informed me I've been contributing 30/= for each spam message! A quick search on Twitter shows several other innocent culprits...

It appears they had some shortcode *699# and 6999 which were used for election updates. But Uhuru is now president, so the hungry vultures are roaming, on the prowl. Mobile subscriber beware!

I almost sued such a firm. I used to receive 3 such messages per week for about 2 years i.e about 6k. Do you call this daylight robbery? I can swear too that i never subscribed to any such service.

But I always see Mlefu advertising the code (His signature is dial *699#). Maybe he has interests in the same and thus he may advise...

Until the 3 weeks ago I was receiving daily messages from these thieves. The whole time I kept saying to myself I will call Safaricom to unsubscribe, but every time it slipped my mind or found me too busy to be bothered. When I finally called them, they insisted that I must have subscribed myself somehow, but they unsubscribed me anyway. Now this morning, I receive the a message from the same number, 21026. I call Safaricom again, this time they ask me to call Roamtech. I try to reach them but it turns out I got one digit wrong, so I end up calling someone else. Anyway, I unsubscribe myself. I am still going to try to reach them and give them a piece of my mind.

Dial *100#
Choose 'Premium Rate Services' in the drop down menu.Navigate the rest of the menu and stop the subscriptions.

I already did that. What bothers me is that this is the second time I am getting subscribed without my consent.

Also beware of some of these "Kill a roach", "Win an iPad", "Download sijui nini" ads on websites. They take you to some page where you need to put your phone number e.t.c. then baam, the spam messages kick in.
