Hopefully this is not a taboo subject ...

For the next few weeks we will witness the world celebrate the life of a great leader. So much can be said about Mandela's life and as far as I know, it has all been positive. I can't imagine the same happening for our presidents especially MO1 with the way he harassed and tortured people.

Do African (read Kenyan) leaders care about their legacy?

Good morning @Zanze

May Madiba rest in peace. His life will be celebrated worldwide.

As for our dear leaders, speeches and speeches will be given about their greatness....locally.

No,.. it is not taboo.
All our past presidents would do well to remember that it is we who have forgiven them, allowed them to live in peace instead of bringing charges against them;
None of them were perfect but I single out Moi for mention without fear of antagonising people here. The damage he did to this country was deliberate, deep and far reaching. Ordinary folk around where I grew up were transformed from thriving farmers and businessmen to grinding poverty as local agriculture (coffee, tea, milk) and industry was systematically decimated by state fuelled corruption and outright theft. May be presidents are too removed to contemplate the effects of their malice, policy and misrule, but kids starved, dropped out of school and went without medicine. It is trampling on small people with iron-soled boots; It is something you can't ever forget if you see it first hand. Mr Moi could have been 1/2 of what Mandela was, 1/4 even - and it would have been great - he pissed away the chance playing Machiavellian politics. No one rules forever. In the end being a politician counts for nothing, being a leader is what makes future generations remember.

It seems that we have a useless lot of presidents - more of politians than leaders, not wise or inspiring, they are near-sighted and self centered. I can't see anyone who would give up the chance for a second term like Mandela did or anyone who would live peacefully with their former enemy. I bet you Moi doesn't give a rats ass whether we light candles at his vigil - in his mind he has lived well and he has enough people kissing his ass to keep him happy.

Whereas Mandela worked hard at uniting a divided nation, All four Kenyan presidents sought to use tribalism and division to mask their incompetence and corruption.
