Interesting view/angle from Kisero. Countries should not be held down by blocs while they could do more improving supply chain
Quote:
In the future, economic integration will be about integrating an developing supply chains. Rather than formal EU-style integration, what will bring East Africa together economically are the large infrastructure projects.
And, instead of approaching integration through negotiations driven by supra-national bodies such as the Arusha-based bureaucracy, deals negotiated at inter-governmental levels are the ones which will push the integration project faster.
Indeed, what will drive economic integration in Africa faster are MoUs and loosely-negotiated inter-governmental deals.

I have heard Tanzanian politicians urging their government to do a parallel deal with Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. That will be good for Africa. When governments invest in infrastructure and supply chains that connect countries, it is the business community in the region which benefits.

oh yes! these deals are not to be exclusive!!
TZ should be free to do a deal with Burundi and DRC, do a deal with SADC and do a deal with EAC!! let it invest where it thinks it can benefit. Kenya should also do a deal with South Sudan and Ethiopia e.t.c. its all about interests.

I agree but its vital to streamline the bureaucracies, permits, visas and other licences that governments impose. Despite the superior infrastructure across europe, the governments had to negotiate and agree on the political basis before the benefits could be reaped in full.

As of yesterday, 1st Jan. 2014, citizens of Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda will only need their national I.d cards to move within these countries, with Tanzania and Burundi expected to join the system later. Ugandans are for the moment going to use voters cards, permits and student I.d cards as their gov't makes plans to issue national I.d cards.
