What biz can one do to generate at least 30k profit a month on 8m x 6m space? That’s the space that remains of my 50x100 plot the rest is the house.

Reason for 30k is this is what I consider to be minimum recurrent expenditure for average town lifestyle by my own standards. Any ideas?

@limanika,
You can try out quail farming..seems to be the craze at the moment
checkout--http://poultrysuccess.blogspot.com/

I will give it a try when I get a suitable place to operate from..

Thanks but confirm the following:
.As per the blog, a cage measuring 4*2.5*1.5ft can house a maximum of 50 quails?
.I understand these are wild animals; will the neighbourhood association rise up in arms against?

What about the stench of the chicken manure? I wouldn't want to live next to that ammonia, i would complain to kanjo. Moreover keeping of livestock within the city is prohibited.

Have you restricted yourself to just farming or are you open to other ideas?

You could open a micro-factory making anything from potato chips to fruit juices to cakes and bread to... non-food items like clothing etc.

You could even put up a nice furnished guest wing and rent it out (B&B) for something like 2kper night....

It all depends on the amount of capital you have to invest.

Farming on anything less than one hectare (2.5acres) is not good utilisation of land. Yes, I know there are people doing and making a profit, but they can make many times more from the same land if they stopped farming and started processing something on the same land!

Just think outside the farming box.

Put up a posho mill; buy dry maize; mill it. Pack the flour and sell....to kiosks in the neighbourhood.

@ Mukiha, much appreciated, your well thought contributions have been missing for some time. Posho mill is out due to noise n dust. Bakery – not sure whether aroma will affect some neighbour. Farming- I agree.

You mill at daytime. Electric posho mills are not that noisy... you could build a clever sound-proofed enclosure...... thinking outside the box

@Mukiha, Advice also how to navigate around the KEBS guys who I understand will insist on seeing the premises (which should be in approved industrial / commercial area) before granting license to use their ‘‘Mark of quality’’

So no one knows how to handle KEBS guys (so you are allowed to use their mark of quality while operating your processing n packaging biz from home)Do we have anything like home biz recognised by the authorities? So no wazuan works at KEBS to shed light?

That space is enough for you to put up 2 DSQs. Then you rent out each at 15k and you have 30k pap.

I think just pay KEBS a visit. Be positive; don't go expecting to be denied license, after all, there are many products made at home.

I also doubt if you absolutely need to use the "Mark of Quality", but that is a question that they will answer for you.

Wakikuletea nyokonyoko, just write to UK direct, or even book an appointment to discuss that with him. His is big on Cottage Industries.....especially if you are under 30!

You are right. Few can afford to put up businesses in approved commercial / industrial zones due to high cost of land. That’s why we are likely to lag behind Ethiopia where all land is owned by govt and all you need is to lease. Solution? Uhuruto should put up appropriate legislation allowing and stipulating regulations for home run businesses. I believe this alone can improve our GDP by a few % points in the long run.

On the same note of micro processing, you could start a water bottling plant, it's a relatively easy to start business and you can then expand as demand dictates.

Quail farming is also an idea, though I have my reservations about it. There has been a lot of noise in the market which has made the birds and their eggs too expensive, not sure if it's sustainable. Who is eating these birds and/ or their eggs, so far all farmers I have spoken to are selling to fellow farmers, pyramid scheme style. Anyway, I shall continue with my research and if it proves viable, jump in.

Just plant a good tree and grass where you or your children can relax and enjoy the fresh air. It might not be profitable but in the end it will be beneficial health wise.
