Hi guys!! Hope y'all are doing well.

Time for my annual road trip. Want to explore new routes.

1. Is there a way to get to Ol Kalou from Nanyuki without having to go to Nyeri?

2. From Ol Kalou, what is the best route to Nakuru without using the Naivasha - Nakuru highway?

From Nakuru, I want to go to Central Rift i.e. Mogotio, Baringo, West Pokot etc. This I have mapped out well, but will welcome suggestions.

I am unusual suspect... Nanyuki to Olkalou. Long time ago there used to be a road connecting Nyeri Nyahururu road from Naromoru through Solio ranch to just past mweiga. Njunge/Simonkabz can confirm is it still exists... my 2 cents

And welcome

We have three routes depending on the time you have.

2. From Ol Kalou, what is the best route to Nakuru without using the Naivasha - Nakuru highway?

We have two routes the choice is yours you can use ol kalou - Center (Dundori) - Nakuru.

Nyahuru - Subukia - Nakuru .

@willin: Asante sana! Just been told about the Mweiga road. Still looking for more info to be sure.

@Mjasirii: Which 3 routes are these? State of the routes? Which one is smoothest? Which one is most scenic?

@kamundu: Thank you. I'm assuming if it rains (as it mostly does in Naro moru at this stage of the year) the Naro moru - Solio route is a no-no? And I would still have to go to Nyahururu, right?

Anyone have any info about Nanyuki - Rumuruti - Nyahururu - Ol Kalou?

Bandits.
If you are going to Nakuru from Nyahururu, why not pass through Subukia instead? There are some very scenic twists high on the Subukia hills ...

Road trip done! Now I can report back

Nairobi - Nanyuki: Road is as good as it has always been. There are some huge potholes after the Munyu junction so be careful.

Nanyuki - Nyahururu: Tried the Rumuruti road but then it started pouring heavily. Decided to turn back after about 10km and go towards Naromoru to use the Solio route. However at Naromoru, I asked around about the state of the road and was told to avoid that route as there were bandits there last week. Prado was jacked and hasn't been found yet.

Naromoru - Nyahururu: Went through Kiganjo junction, through Ndaragwa. Excellent smooth road. You can do 200kph here easily.

Nyahururu - Subukia: Excellent road as well with a few potholes. After Subukia, was told the road is in very bad shape all the way to Ndundori. So turned back to Nyahururu. Sad couldn't drive down the escarpment, so decided to go to Maralal!!

Nyahururu - Maralal: Very good road with a few nasty sections after the Rumuruti junction. Many convoys heading to Loyiangalani. Went had lunch at Safari Lodge and returned to Nyahururu!

Nyahururu - Gilgil: Another excellent road. Some bad sections after Ol Jororok. After Ol Kalou, there is a section about 10km that is being repaired i.e. just after Pembroke House.

Hi Sasha. It's been long.I have been absent and so i missed all this.I guess from Nyahururu to Rumuruti, you used the tarmac road through Kia Maina,Rwathia,Kwa Mira (A corruption of Miller) all the way.Next time and for some real adventure you might consider this.

1.There is a small center called Mairo Inya (Ma-Four they say)along Nyahururu-Nyeri road.Turn left just after the centre. You will pass through Shauri,Kwa Njora,Leshao Pondo,Raichiri,Karamutoni (Corruption for Crampton's),Salama,Ruriani (Gikuyu for Lorian) and right into Rumuruti.......You can then proceed to Nanyuki via Ol-Jogi and vice versa.

2.There are three roads all leading to Nakuru from Nyahururu. Two have been mentioned but you could also do Nyahururu, take a right turn at Ol-Jolorok,through Passenga,Ndundori,Lanet and bang!....

3. I can't believe you didn't do Ol-Kalou-Tumaini-Ndundori road on your way back.Damn!....there is a next time.

rgds.
