stressed kweli, grow its own sugarcare. Answer is land.

@Angelica _ann, Very right. Commercially viable production cannot be actualized when relying on small-scale producers bulking the commodity. Have you ever wondered why sugar from Brazil, miles and miles away is ridiculously cheap as compared with our produce? In Brazil, the acres and acres of production are commercially owned and do not rely on poor farmers crying daily of high production costs . That way, the commercial farmers are able to maximize on returns.

The problem is not the size of the farms. the Sugar industry has 2 main problems;
1. Cane variety; ours takes 18-24 months to mature, the serious producers in the world e.g Kenana (sudan), Illovo (SA) have varieties that take 9 months.
2. Politics; our govt backed sugar companies are not for profit entities, they are social companies. Proof, a Muhindi recently set up West Kenya Sugar Company (Kabras), he is now the second largets sugar producer, I bet he will surpass Mumias in the next 24 months, he doesn't have a nucleas estate, and purchases cane from mostly small scale farmers. Some may accuse him of cane poaching etc, but those saying this are trying to divert attention from the inefficiencies in the other gava agencies. He is so far succedding by keeping costs low and running his company for profit.

Mumias with is sugar, power and other products should not be making any losses, something is extremely wrong. Watu wanakula.

As Mumias lurches along...

Let's hope for Mumias' sake that they can compete head on with the long established firms!

Is this new development sufficient enough to lift the ailing shares out of the woods?

If this humongous and inefficient company is unable to compete against minute local entities, how will it fair against brand giants like Coca-Cola Juices, Del Monte, Kevian, Excel Chemicals, Quencher and Highlands?

@Pesanane its unbelievable that MSC makes losses given how lucrative Kenyas sugar market is...the former CEO killed this company...MSC problems starts with TARDA...the former CEO failed to bring TARDA online...his execution rate was pathetic also...i.e ethanol plants..

I dont know for how long will GoK keep protecting this thing from competition....once those COMESA safeguards expire....this thing will fold...given the current state of the global sugar market.

I used to praise the guy maybe it was because of the dividends but I think he failed miserably at MSC...unbelievable he is the Gov of Nairobismile

@the deal @PesaNane be wary of the notion of:
"the great villain" that is to blame for all misery
"the panacea" or cure for all life's ills

From that perspective, Mr. Evans Kidero cannot be the main story in Mumias fortunes, just as Mr. Chris Kirubi is not the only story in Uchumi, or Mr. Naushad Merali in Sameer. These are poor to average companies in difficult industries; the human mind actively seeks a scapegoat.

The solution to Mumias woes is having it's own sugarcane farm as the major contributor of sugarcane.Relying on farmers is not sufficient to keep the factory running optimally.
And for this TARDA is the solution.The retained earnings currently in it's books can be used to secure credit to construct the factory at Tana River.
This small quick fixes of today water,tomorrow juice are non-sense.
Ethanol is a good project.
A sugar factory normally produces sugarr,ethanol,baggasse and electricity as the major by-products from sugar cane.If mumias sticks to this it will be a profitable venture

@mwekezaji - MSC is back testing 3.50/-

A lot of volume has traded for MSC since the start of 2013 (Jan, Mar, Apr and July) and none of this volume spike has pushed the price above 5/-. The spike has done the opposite and crashed below 4/- This is distribution and I still expected this thing to tank below 3/-

Kenya seeks another term of sugar safeguards - http://www.businessdaily...6/-/1hjsmi/-/index.html

Last safety line for MSC by gok as Comesa expiry window beckons... Not to forget MSC is already sitting below 2009 GFC low (3.60) as well as has printed an all time low of 3.35.
