Good morning wazuans, are there any institutions or persons in Nairobi who have a telescope and can allow me to gaze at the skys? I need to have a closer look at the milky way galaxy, mars & other planets, moon and the stars. If there are none, where can one buy one? Thanks As long as you're going to be thinking anyway, think big

Gut feeling is only @Typo can know of such things. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God..

Buy hapa at AMAZON UK and ask Morey or the Warias to ship to you coz i don't think Amazon ships directly to Kenyan addresses. You can also load the 'Google Skyview' app on your smartphone to help you gaze at the sky and identify the stars and the planets.

Well, welcome to the club, i purchased a telescope 6omm aperture, focal length 900mm from Ebay, the seller was based in China, item was shipped to Kenya via ems, it cost me $120+20 =140 dollars. KRA charged me 3295/= I ordered the item in mid September and it arrived in early October. So far, i can clearly see the craters on the moon and very enjoyable. When it comes to other celestial bodies, it doesn't do so well, the light gets faded, it came with Barlow lenses of 20mm, 12.5mm and 2 mm, surprisingly, 20mm gives the best view. The telescope is refractive telescope for beginners, if i were you, i'd purchase one with 110mm and above aperture. I checked olx but the ones on sale were spotting scopes and not Astronomical telescopes.

Thanks, will try the app. I am surprised that as an astronomy enthusiast you do not already have the app. Downloading it is the best thing you can ever do. I have had it for some time and thanks to it even my kids can pinpoint planets such as mars,Venus, jupiter, Saturn, neptune, uranus etc in the sky, and also stars and constellations such as sirius, saggitarius, allphard, capella, cancer, gemini, aquarius, scorpius etc. However i am also thinking of getting a telescope to view the extra celestial bodies in more detail.

Anyway @ holycow what are space dimensions for such a telescope. can it fit on a balcony? The only time you should be looking down on others is when you are helping them up.

The challenge with visibility is always determined by the amount of light that is collected, so yes, definitely, the wider the aperture, the more light can be collected, and thus the more clear the image will be on the naked eye. On the other side, when doing digital photography of celestial bodies, increasing the exposure time when taking the photo, will brighten the image. What you can see from earth largely depends of the equipment that you have. Now, there are some very advanced equipment that can get some outstanding images, e.g. the Very Large Telescope array (VLT)- The world's most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory. http://www.eso.org/public/teles-instr/vlt/

Macro-stuff!!! Hebu post them, we need to try and make sense of the mind boggling vastness of the universe and the relatively insignificant size of our planet. One of the most amazing photos from the universe is the “pale blue dot”, an image of the earth taken 6 billion kms away: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pale_Blue_Dot. This dot is 4.5 billion years old and is expected to support life for the next 7.9 billion years (the expected remaining life of our sun). If you are lucky you spend only 65 years in this dot, more like a micro second in its life! As long as you're going to be thinking anyway, think big
