When I first had interest in this country called Japan, i was told that it had 150 million people now its at 126 million. it's median age is 44.6 when compared to the most populous african country - Naija which is at 19.1. its population is imploding and this is a cause of concern.

Is Japan providing a glimpse of all our futures? Many of the shifts there are occurring in other advanced nations, too. Across urban Asia, Europe and America, people are marrying later or not at all, birth rates are falling, single-occupant households are on the rise and, in countries where economic recession is worst, young people are living at home. But demographer Nicholas Eberstadt argues that a distinctive set of factors is accelerating these trends in Japan. These factors include the lack of a religious authority that ordains marriage and family, the country's precarious earthquake-prone ecology that engenders feelings of futility, and the high cost of living and raising children.

"Gradually but relentlessly, Japan is evolving into a type of society whose contours and workings have only been contemplated in science fiction," Eberstadt wrote last year. With a vast army of older people and an ever-dwindling younger generation, Japan may become a "pioneer people" where individuals who never marry exist in significant numbers, he said.

Japanese-American author Roland Kelts, who writes about Japan's youth, says it's inevitable that the future of Japanese relationships will be largely technology driven. "Japan has developed incredibly sophisticated virtual worlds and online communication systems. Its smart phone apps are the world's most imaginative." Kelts says the need to escape into private, virtual worlds in Japan stems from the fact that it's an overcrowded nation with limited physical space. But he also believes the rest of the world is not far behind.

Japan’s total fertility rate in 2012 hit a 16-year high of 1.41, while the number of births fell to a new low of 1,037,101. The number of deaths in the year hit a postwar high of 1,256,254, reflecting the aging of the population.

I watched a feature about the same on NHK the other day and I couldn't help but think to myself: we may not like the U.S very much right now but those thousands of green cards they issue every year are a master stroke. They help ensure a young working population. Of course it ain't as simplistic as I've put it.

Japan as we know it will not be there in 100 years however I know that by then the racial distinctions we have now will not be present as migration will be speeded up by technology. future humans (300 -400 years fron now) will be a bit of everything racially speaking.

Technology is offering 'eternity'. And the Japanese are pioneering indeed. This is one train we can jump into and transform life immensely.

Akina Tokyo and others will move there. Pakistanis, Africans, South Americans and in a couple of years population will kick back up. Human beings cannot just die out but there will be some changes after all changes are the only thing to expect!

I think this is the future of humanity, as we become more efficient, mechanised and wired. Not a bad thing I may say.
