I would also vote for Samsung LED.
It needs not be smart but at least let it be Full HD.
If you are adventurous... try 3D.

I'd strongly recommend that one buys a smart tv. I have been exploring the smart hub of my recent purchase and it's just amazing. Apart from the numerous apps, there is a web browser so that the telly is basically turned into a computer and one can surf the web. You can surf using the remote, but I have a wireless mouse and keyboard which makes surfing the web easy. And with the 'Picture in picture'functionality you can watch as you surf.

Pay close attention to the refresh rate. The greater it is (above 120Hz), the better.

As far as smart TVs are concerned, Samsung recommends internet speeds of >10Mbps in order to enjoy that functionality.

That speed could be the optimum but am able to stream HD content with a 3mbps home wifi connection. For accessing non-HD content even 0.5mbps can do.

Ahem. Guess I need to check mine again. Huku abroad (aka machinani) internet speeds can often be pathetic to say the least.

It's now been three weeks since you got the set. Hand to heart, how many of those options have you used?

This is like asking why someone should spend thousands to buy a smartphone instead of buying a 999bob mulika-mwizi phone.

some consider tv as a medium of entertainment; you seem to consider it a tool. to each their own.

Looking at those prices on the samsungtech website, I can see that prices of televisions in Kenya are very high. Why is this the case?

True. And it doesn't make sense hata kama ni taxes since those in US, Uk etc also pay taxes.

I bought the telly at 74k and it seems to have gone down to 70k. The same model is currently selling at 63k at Amazon UK (RINK) and 45k at Amazon US (RINK). I think that this is quite unfair since incomes in the US and UK are much higher than Kenya while prices in Kenya are much higher. Even if the prices were uniform across the board, it would still be unfair to Kenyans due to their relatively lower incomes.

And it is the same with cars. A brand new 2014 Corolla is going for Ksh 1.4m in the US (RINK) which is nearly the same amount kenyans are paying for a 7yr old jalopy from japan. Meanwhile Toyota Kenya is selling a brand new corolla at Ksh 3.5m. Total madness!!!

No wonder we will always remain poor coz of low incomes and inflated prices of goods.

I used to think like you never thought of buying myself a smart fone. One day I decided to upgrade my lady s fone and she gave me her old smart fone and my life has never been the same. This thing is very addictive I find myself poking it, taking unnecessary photos, downloading funny apps. I spend a lot of money on data bundles, I can't stop it I need an intervention.

These things are deemed luxury by our good government hence the higher taxes than in developed world where they are just basic goods.

After scouring the length and breath of the City in the Sun, spent an afternoon at the Nakumatt Prestige audio shop, done BJ_Store in Adams Arcade, visited olx.co.ke, done the Garissa Lodge shuffle, finally settled on a walalo LG 42" LED along Luthuli Avenue at ksh 45K. Life is Good.

So juzi i discovered a way of linking my galaxy tab to the smart TV. This means i can now watch HD 1080p content accessed on the tab from the web on the telly. It's just amazing to watch 1080p HD documentaries and movies on the telly. The picture quality is like the one you see hapo nakumatt kwa Samsung display. And now my DSTV which transmits at 320p & 480p looks like crap compared to the 1080p HD content.
