Equity’s buyout of collapsed broker causes a stir at NSE #The Game Changer

Equity Bank’s acquisition of stockbroker Francis Thuo & Partners was concluded amidst stiff resistance by other market intermediaries fearing domination and loss of business from the lender, it has emerged.

Equity, which is Kenya’s largest lender by the number of customer accounts, has been negotiating the acquisition in the past few weeks amid stiff resistance from other brokers with an interest in the bank’s stock market portfolio.

People familiar with the transaction said Equity Investment Bank, a subsidiary of Equity Bank, had acquired Francis at a price of Sh150 million.

Equity bank has half the number of bank accounts in Kenya … Equity Bank will get all the Wanjiku. …. I believe CBA is going for the high networth clients who are their main clients. ... so, the bull (equity) and the calf (CBA) are not in the same pen

Equity has been acting on behalf of 4 stockbrokers, now, what will happen to us? Will we be transfered to Equity Investment or will we be dealing with our actual brokers henceforth!

I would have thought this signals a move to go after 'wanjiku'

I always feel safe when my money is been held by an actual bank.

The CDC Accounts were opened at Equity Investment Bank and they have an Equity code at the start of the CDC Number. Equity was then using the brokers to execute trades which will now cease. The brokers will loose the income they were getting out of Equity Bank executing the trades through them. Equity Bank gains by now getting the brokerage commission from its large clients … In short, clients ni wa Equity Bank. Most of the clients dint even know that Equity Bank was executing the trades via the brokers

But according to the following excerpt of the BD, equity has just been an agent of brokers
BD wrote:

Equity’s investment arm has been an agent for four or five brokers – a multi-million shilling business that they now stand to lose.

@dunkang, does your CDS A/C Number start with an Equity Bank code or another brokers code?
