Big scam. Owners sell the cars then report them as stolen to insurance companies. They make money twice, from the buyer and from the insurance company. Credible due to the economic slowdown and job losses in Europe. Then the insurance company comes looking for the car.

dunkang, that can be countered by the buyer travelling to the UK in person to oversee the purchase if we were to peg the travel at 200k, one would still save a heap of cash

Travelling to UK does not make it safer.... Many of the stolen cars are cloned... even from dealers. ...

But agreed, there is a significant saving to be made if you do it right.

jk, if i were to walk in to lookers land rover park royal on western ave. london chances of me being grifted are basically nil because this is a company approved dealership, it only takes a bit of diligence to close on a good deal as, as you rightly put it if done correctly there are significant savings to be made

If you walked into lookers or most Land Rover (or even Mercedes) appointed dealers, you are likely to be given a hard time should you mention that you intend to export in order to avoid VAT.
Some (all Mercedes-Benz) dealers get penalised for selling vehicle to be exported to countries where there are dealerships like DT Dobie...
It can be done if you with hold the information regarding export.

So the chance of being 'grifted' does exist when you deal with other traders.
