Apparently, most of the african population is far from the coast and that makes transportation expensive. just got me thinking - this is how most countries seem to have beaten the cost of transport. Think about it, if majority of Kenya's population lived around the coastal area we would be able to get stuff to majority of the people faster and cheaper.

Now that they don't, wake-up and start thinking. If this, if that, is wishful thinking(dreaming) and won't take you anywhere.

Railway line. Until we get that right, we're not heading anywhere fast. Everytime I'm in northern Kenya, I always ask how those guys managed to build cement houses. Knowing how bulky a product it is, it must be damn expensive getting it there by road.

I just observed that many major cities actually are at the coast! or have access to a port or a waterway. if you cannot take Mohammed to Mecca then I suggest you take Mecca to Mohammed. Even with a railway line. It will be best if most of us lived at 'Pwani'.... Lamu e.t.c. If we could setup most export oriented industries there our products will be more competitive. Ama?

Think about it...
1. Shanghai
2. New York
3. Los Angeles
4. Shenzhen
5. Hong Kong
6. Singapore
7. London (via the Themes)
8. Amsterdam
9. São Paulo
10. Cairo
11. Tripoli
12. Lagos
e.t.c
with this in mind - why is Lamu not an industrial city?

Infrastructure perhaps? Ever been there? If you choose road, please know it's not tarmacked all the way. And should it rain heavily, huge sections of the mainland district, including the road, can remain under water for up to two weeks at a time. If you choose to fly, the airport at Manda isn't such a big one as such, and air fares are not exactly cheap in Kenya. Last I recall, Air Kenya charged I think around 12k, KQ was more. And then, perhaps most importantly, land policies. Sheria zetu za mashamba are a total mess. As a result, Lamu (especially the island) suffers from chronic housing shortage, with consequent high rent prices. Back in the early to mid 2000s, single room with shared amenities cost 6-8k p.m in rent. Just my honest observations and opinions.
