BA staff are working for free to save their airline. Is KQ operating in the same environment?

Despite the Industrial Court prohobiting the strike, the union and its members are still going on with the strike. How legal is this?? Any Lawyers in the house??

The Industrial Court did not & cannot prohibit the strike! It can only term it as illegal. All they did is request the employees union to withhold their action until the court has heard both sides of the story i.e. from the union and from the management.
Apparently both sides have met 27 times trying to resolve this standoff with neither party willing to compromise. The union wants 130% hike, the management has already offered 8% which the employees are currently enjoying! Considering the way the courts these days are readily willing to make precedent rulings, this one will be interesting!

Lets not forget the UK which was the bedrock of car manufacturing currently owns very few car manufacturers. jaguar, rover, bedford, leyland .... etc. Unions brought them to their knees
The US,where 3 million new cars are made every yr cannot support it's car industry and was threatening to fold without government intervention, not because of poor sales/ competition or whatever else may be fashionable to blame. They just cant pay union wages and benefits.
If KQ managers are overpaid then they should address that. 2 wrongs will kill the goose.

If you look at any organization, the top paid individuals will always be management and critical staff. In KQ,that means the pilots. Alot of responsibility is placed on their hands, lives of people and those $$$$ aircrafts. They will always be paid alot. How much you earn always depends on how much responisibility you have.
My boss's salary can pay 5 of us,i dont complain,i just work hard to get my money and hopefully i will be the boss one day.
150% rise is ridiculous, however,it depends on how big the rise will affect the payroll. if 80% account for 20%,then it actually means that the payroll will only go up by 30%,which may be possible. In the year 2007-2008,the wage bill was 7bn. an increase of 30% in this will make the wage bill 10.5bn. That wipes out all the profits for that year. Fact: Erosion of shareholder value.
The company's management will always look out for the shareholder value first. The employees and others are subsidiary. I see people going home.
But maybe the top guys need a cut in salaries,i think they are over-compensated. I dont know how much the pilots and management are paid, but the ratio speaks volumes.

There are many. many airlines that serve Kenya... by going on strike (they were offered 11% increases) for 150% (ati,a janitor wants 50k)... then wacha they go on strike... KQ will send its passengers with KLM & AF albeit at lower margins... and the striking workers will lose their jobs. KQ can replace many of the staff who do low-level jobs very easily. As for cabin crew,I think KQ will rely on its partners for now. In the next few months the crew members who ran to Emirates & Qatar will return as they scale down. Also many Indian airlines are scaling down. Now I see why outsorcing makes sense. Outsource, outsource, outsource whatever you can. Union officials are mad. Workers will loose in the long run.

I think you would have to be crazy to strike unless you know that your presence at KQ is critical. So many guys have graduated from the universities this year yet no company is currently hiring.....then you want to strike?!Unless you are critical to any company,a guy will be trained so fast to do your job at half your cost. Those who feel that Emirates,Qatar Airways are paying better should go there...... I can assure you that as people strike today.....CVs are flooding at KQ for that 'poor pay'. . . and with some training.....It's all a matter of demand and supply....ask indians why they move to work in other countries despite of their technical expertise and fairly good education! The world is changed by those who dare dream. Formally employed people often live their employers' dream & forget about their own.

Rumour has it that some employees are now asking the union to cool down with their hard stances!
If they strike, if I was Naikuni, I would summarily dismiss all those who do not show up to work when called, and proceed on a recruitment drive. In the meantime, outsource from KLM, Virgin and the rest!

Ku-strike ni bure... just wait till the paychecks stop coming in... some flights delayed coz of go-slow... KQ made a mega-loss in 2008-9... run to EK or QR if u think they pay better. Many airlines use 'wet leases' meaning they hire aircraft+crew. This often happens in emergency or strike situations. Wet-leasing is more expensive BUT enables the airline to continue with services. Also KLM will probably take over some routes for KQ esp AMS-NBO. Tanzania routes can be taken over by Precision Air. It's tricky for the staff to go on strike.A recourse at the industrial court is not a guarantee to anything better than the 11/13% management offer going by the kind of -ve profit they made last year.If anything, the court may decline to offer anything at all or even ask staff to take a pay cut.The union must realise that the days of banging table tops are long gone.........However,am surprised at the low wages the company gives to the lower cadre of employees.21K inclusive of allowances in Nairobi is low .I doubt that compares well with peers in the region. Old man about town.... Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.
