Content,BPO (even as a one man operation for serious back office stuff - not data entry and calls). Telcos will evolve into broadcasters and people will want content, advertisers will look closely at this delivery model. Bon chance.

The problem with equality is that we desire that it be with those that have more than us rather that those that have less

ok,here is the ABC - right now you use your phone for email and some basic browsing. Not just phone but even at home you either have a dial up line (telkom) or some GSM service (Bambanet, etc) connecting a laptop or desktop. But you have a limit on usage and therefore use it sparingly. These operators need to DRIVE data usage already since voice revenues are declining because of price wars (and anyway people can only talk SO MUCH). They could drive data usage already but that might not work now that they charge abt 2k per month for a certain amount of usage. With fibre, they can no longer justify such costs - in fact it might be as low as Kshs 300 for similar usage - so how to get every Kariuki,Onyango and Mutiso to USE MORE? Content. More local content. There is only so much CNN,Yahoo, etc we can do - speeds will be high - what about music, animations, education materials (e-learning),medicine (tele medicine) etc etc. How about broadcast content (tv programmes, animations, cartoons, etc). With the kind of speeds we will see, operators will no longer offer the plain old data - it will include even broadcast content - right now you need a damn expensive handset to get DSTV from Safaricom - but in the next year or so,you could get this to your PC/laptop for much less since the data speeds will be much higher.

In the periphery there are advertisers keen to tap in to the online community - content is what will attract people to certain websites and those websites with high traffic will be assured of advertisers, esp where the websites target a certain demographic group. So,put on ye thinking caps and think how to play in this arena. The internet has grown in leaps in bounds in the west because of CONTENT - much of this western content has also helped drive the market here - but how much relevant is it to Kenyans? Its mainly because of a lack of local content that we end up on yahoo.com,redtube.com :) youtube, facebook, etc.

The problem with equality is that we desire that it be with those that have more than us rather that those that have less

But also do not just focus on the internet services, this cable will also serve as a local communications loop. One area a small time player can ready himself for is revival of fixed line operations. If you have traveled around, you will have noticed that fixed line services are still the backbone of telephony. KP&TC just messed up Kenyan's. There are many laid-off technicians lying around who can do some of the following jobs that will be in high demand.
1. Installing telephone extension & PABX systems
2. Sales and service of Fax machines and land line telephones
3. Fibre optic signal processors/modulators.
It is not too early to start presenting yourself to prospective clients, hunt for those laid-off technicians and send someone to Dubai to research on stock. Remember, the early birds will overprice the goods and will mainly focus on using reliable brands. You can come in a bit lower both on price and...eh...dubai kind of phones...be ready with your cash to move in a flash
