Background - Back in the day, my old man had this killer Pioneer "tenje", with a stack of "old people" music as I saw it.

10+ years in the frozen tundra and now I want that old people music. I've become old.

So, I'll start collecting some of the best zilizopendwa records from the 80s and 90s. I'm looking for recommendations and suggestions on some of your favorites. I'm thinking anything from Franco to Maroon Commandos. What are the must have top ten LPs I should listen to before the year is out?

- This is a fair start.http://www.amazon.com/Kenya-Dance-Mania/dp/B000QZR58Y/ref=tmm_other_meta_binding_title_0

Very True. Very Inevitable. I'm surprised how it seemed to sneak up on me....all off a sudden, I am baba so and so and my kids think I'm embarrassing!

smile smile The cycle of life ndiyo hiyo. Mimi kitu natafuta sana ni that old gramophone, ile ya Sanyo that looked like a briefcase when shut. My old man's broke down (ok, tuliiharibusmile ) and it has proved unrepairable.
Life is like playing a violin solo in public and learning the instrument as one goes on.

...Bro...You are either a foreigner or you live in those upmarket places where you never have a chance to meet hawkers...If you walk down Mfangano street you will see all those stalls selling mp3s...Ask them to give you copies of Franco music...There must be about 5 CDs (mp3s) for Francos music...And at ksh50 bob each...And if all that fails...I can help you with my collection...My Ipod has 25,000 songs...Most of which I downloaded before Megaupload website was shut down...All of very good quality...You can get some of the music which has been re-upped from this blog and other blogs which you can find when yo click on the 'next blog' up there.

Been awhile since I last saw one of those...Reminds me when I used the old man's records as toys, aiming at bottles. With painful consequences!

1. Sit outside a pub in Nairobi West...Hawkers will bring to you all sorts of music...
2. Visit Melodica for old old old records (can get some vinyl records there too if you have a GRAMAPHONE!!!)
3. Holler when around...I can share with you some of my collection!

how can you claim to enjoy good music while you listen to them in the mp3 format? abk. use at least .flak and for your ipod you get and listen to your musict in the apple lossless format. your mp3 megaupload collection is as useless as ndetei the politician.

There's a shop, shortl after Tom Mboya/Ronald Ngala streets junction on the left hand side ukitembea towards Haile Selassie avenue that may have the same. I happened to pop-in there while unsuccessfully hunting for the said gramophone and I saw they have some of that. They also supply some gramophone 'consumables' e.g stylus. Shop name is Melodica.

Magigi suggested Melodica too. I'll stop on my next trip. I found Franco on Amazon but $85 is way too much for a CD!

Thanks for the suggestions

Welcome to the world of tranquillity..

there is a shop along Moi avenue, opposite Assanands... hapo utapata all you looking for

Unless you want to do it the old fashion way.. vinyl, gramophone.. clean the vinlyl, place it in position.. takes some skill to place the 'ka-needle'... listen to the 'shhhhhhhhh' sound atleast 5 seconds... Then the song starts...

"Nabiso Candidat Mobutu Sese..na biso candidat mobutu sese... bandoki basiliteee" 17:30minutes side A
In your case you are singing

"makambo ezali binene.. mambo ngumu Ulaya... "

Musicland? I remember the place. I think that was the name back in the 90s. These places have incredible staying power!

I find that I listen to vinyl because it has a different sound. Less clean and clinical but more rounded. Part of it is just uzee.

I'll definitely check it out
