The conspracy theories probably started from the movie 'Capricorn 1' Which is described below (source,wikipedia):

Plot
The setting is the late 1970s,and the first manned mission to Mars is on the launch pad. NASA authorities including Dr. James Kelloway (Hal Holbrook) realize that a faulty life support system has doomed any chance of a successful flight,so for political and financial purposes they decide to fake the landing rather than cancel the mission.

Minutes before launch,the bewildered crew of Col. Brubaker (James Brolin),Lt. Col. Willis (Sam Waterston),and Cmdr. Walker (O. J. Simpson) are removed from the capsule and flown to an old abandoned United States Army Air Corps base deep within the desert. The televised launch proceeds on schedule,but the public is unaware that the spacecraft (Capricorn One) does not have a crew.

At the remote base,the astronauts are informed they will fake the television footage from Mars and it is their patriotic duty to participate. Initially they refuse,but authorities imply their careers and the lives of their families are at stake if they do not cooperate.

The astronauts remain in captivity for a period of several months and are filmed 'landing on Mars' within a studio located at the base. The conspiracy is known to only a select few NASA officials,until alert technician Elliot Whittier (Robert Walden) stumbles across a bizarre technical anomaly i.e. television transmissions from Mars made by the crew are being received by ground control before the spacecraft telemetry arrives. He is confused by the anomaly and wishes to investigate further,but is told not to worry about it by his employer. Even so,Whittier feels sufficiently uneasy to share his concerns with journalist friend Robert Caulfield (Elliott Gould) at a local bar,but before Whittier can fully set out his concerns,he mysteriously disappears.

As Caulfield discovers that all evidence of his friend's life appear to have been erased,he becomes suspicious and begins investigating the Mars mission. Attempts to silence Caulfield by trying to kill him are made,but Caulfield survives. Meanwhile back at the abandoned military base,the astronauts begin to suspect that if the conspiracy is to be successful,they will eventually have to be eliminated. The astronauts' suspicions become reality when their empty capsule burns up during atmospheric reentry and they are declared dead to a mournful nation. The captive astronauts immediately stage a daring escape and attempt to evade military forces in order to expose the conspiracy. Stranded in the desert,they try to make their way back to civilization while being pursued by a pair of helicopters.

In the end,Brubaker is the only crew member to avoid capture,Willis and Walker are captured and presumably murdered. Caulfield's investigation leads him to the desert,where he finds the military base and the set,and with the help of a cropduster pilot (Telly Savalas),he manages to rescue Brubaker before the men in the helicopters can capture or kill him.

The film ends with Caulfield bringing Brubaker to the astronauts' memorial service,exposing the conspiracy in dramatic fashion in front of dozens of witnesses and live national television.

How many Americans believe that the Moon Landing was a hoax?
The Moon Landing Conspiracy Theorists were initially labeled as crackpots and fools but recent Market Research studies have indicated that approximately 20% of Americans now believe that there is enough cumulative evidence to suggest that man never went to the moon - that the Lunar Landing was a hoax - a fake moon landing hoax - a Conspiracy Theory.

What reasons would the US Government have to fake such an event?
To answer such a question can only lie in space exploration history. The decade of the sixties was consumed by thoughts of the Cold War between Russia and the USA. The Russian launch of Sputnik terrified the USA due to the fear of nuclear annihilation. There was a real fear that the winners of the Space Race could build a Nuclear Missile Base on the Moon. Did this lead to the speculation about a Fake Moon Landing Hoax - a Conspiracy Theory?

What evidence do the Fake Moon Landing Conspiracy Theorists have?
The evidence and ideas put forward by the Fake Moon Landing Conspiracy Theorists include the following:

· Absence of engine noise in official NASA footage - how was it possible to clearly hear the voices of the Astronauts?

· Pictures of the ascent of the LEM - images appear to show that the LEM was jerked up,as if by a cable,there was no evidence of an exhaust plume

· Grainy,Unclear images although technology at the time could have produced much clearer images - Did NASA intentionally make the images hard to see?

· Still Photographs - Cameras were fitted to the Astronauts chest - there was no view finder and photographs could only be taken by movement of the body but 1000's of flawless photographs were taken

· Crosshairs on Still Photographs - The crosshairs on the photographs could only be on the top of images but pictures of the Astronauts and the Flag clearly show that the crosshairs were partially obscured,beneath the images

· Shadows - The only source of light on the moon was the Sun but shadows were cast in multiple directions

· Lighting - Images of Astronauts were brightly lighted although their positions would have clearly been in shadow. Some images indicate that the Astronauts appeared to be in spotlight

· Backgrounds - the backdrops or the moonscape of some images appear to be identical although NASA stated that the images were taken at different times and locations which were over 2 miles apart

· The Van Allen Radiation Belt - Could the Astronauts survive travelling through the deadly radiation belt which is situated 500 miles above the earth and is 1000's of miles thick with only the protection from their space suits and the thin covering of the space ship when it is estimated that 6 feet of lead would be necessary would have been needed. None of the Astronauts have since showed any signs of radiation poisoning

· No other manned mission has gone through the Belt

· Silencing - It seems unreasonable that information would not have been leaked about any such hoax - theorists therefore believe that key witnesses,including members of the Astronaut Corps,were deliberately silenced. Between 1964 and 1967,10 astronauts died in accidents - 15% of the corps.






Can the Moon Landings ever be proved?
YES - The moon landings can be proved or exposed as the biggest fake ever perpetrated. Remnants and objects from the Missions have been left at each landing site. Close up photographs of these items will provide irrefutable proof that the Moon Landing took place. We must wait for either satellites passing near enough to the moon surface to provide such photographs or for improved technology to provide a telescope powerful enough to provide this proof.
