I want security doors for two maisonettes that I am building.

I went comparison shopping and found a wide range of prices from KES 18,000 all the way to KES 500,000 for Israeli built doors that I loved, but the price range is out of my reach.

Israel doors:

My question: Do you know anyone who is reverse engineering these kinds of doors here in Kenya?

Thanks!

Another question:

Know of anyone who fabricates windows/doors with stainless steel? I am told that SS is way more secure than traditional chuma (steel) since SS cannot be cut with the usual tools available to most common wezi.

@Dahatre, if thieves really really wanted to get into your house, even with those doors for 500k they will still get in.

But those are the doors you want so...

I would like to know how one can identify standard and non standard Y12s, Y16s etc. I went to the hardware shop to get some chuma and was informed that they have standard and non-standard

the 8,12 16,20 refer to the diameter. If you have a measuring instrument such as a veneer caliper etc, you can just measure.
As to the quality of the steel eg maleability etc, last time i checked at Devki, they did not chemically analyse since they used scrap metal. Associated Steel are more detailed . They should be in a capacity to offer detailed chemical analysis of their steel eg carbon content, iron content etc.

With the numerous building collapse, i am hoping that Kenya bureau of standards will move a step further and enfroce steel standards not just in terms of diameter, but to include chemical analysis content eg % of carbon, iron ,manganese , how malleable the steel is etc. KBS should set the standards in conjunction with Engineers association of Kenya.

@A4Architect,

Many thanks for your valued advice on this forum.

How would you rate these locally produced Tactile stone coated roofing tiles? Do they fade? How would they compare with Decra - costwise, aesthectics, etc?

@limanika. 99% of stone coated steel roof tiles use gauge 26 steel mabati.

All stone coated steel roofs are the same.
The reason some fade is that they come in basic colours so when someone requests a special colour, they just spray paint using car paint. This spray painting is the reason for fading.

They are all manufactured in China under same standards.

Someone in Australia/New Zealand has been holding the patent for this.Am sure by now the patent has expired.

In 1954, L.J. Fisher, an industrialist from New Zealand, secured the rights to produce stone-coated metal roofing outside of Great Britain. The company he founded, AHI Roofing, operates the largest metal roofing factory in the world, and has continued to make changes to the metal roofing product.[3]

Not sure if you read the link in my previous post or maybe am missing something. Apparently these tactile stone coated sheets are being manufactured locally – by tile and carpet, and are about 25% cheaper than the Decra tiles. Now, Tile and carpet is a respected company and just wanted to know if anyone can recommend their stone coated tiles. I would consider them if the product is good rather than importing from China and end up creating jobs in china. ANYONE?
