I have a lot of respect for the communities living in Kenya, but I cannot understand why some cultures still condone early marriages and female genital mutilation in this age!

I watched AM Live @ NTV this morning and there was a story which was very touching. It is the story of Josphine Kulea, a young Samburu child rights activist who is involved in the rescue of young girls on the verge of early marriage and female genital mutilation. She has rescued girls as young as 7 from early marriage and put them in school. What I found disturbing is the admission that the young girls are expected to consummate the marriage after their wounds heal. Why would a grown a** man sleep with a girl who is as young as seven? Shame on you Come on people, this is so 1700's!

Unless these communities are taught the harm they do to those little girl...I dont think they will ever want to understand...I can imagine how many more have to go thru that cruel act

Read in the Nation last week, girls as young as 11 are having sex in exchange for body lotion, perfumed soap and sanitary towels. There is also the poverty factor. One girl said the mom cannot afford to buy her sanitary towels and they boyfriend does. And she thanks him in kind.
Lord, thank you!

It's good that girls from these communities are coming out to "educate" their people on the dangers of FGM and early marriage. The County governments in those areas have their work cut for them. It should be made the number one priority. I fail to understand why a girl as young as 7 years is married off to an old guy. And the guy would be like this is my wife? Damn!

This happens within the slums. In the rural areas, these girls are circumcised, and married. A ten year old girl who doesn't even understand what life means becomes someone's wife! Oh, boy! Massive sensitization is needed here.

Some of these boyfriends are people who are over 18 years. They deserve to rot in jail. By the way, defilement in Kenya is a serious crime - whether there was consent or not.
