I have a lot of respect for the communities living in Kenya, but I cannot understand why some cultures still condone early marriages and female genital mutilation in this age!

I watched AM Live @ NTV this morning and there was a story which was very touching. It is the story of Josphine Kulea, a young Samburu child rights activist who is involved in the rescue of young girls on the verge of early marriage and female genital mutilation. She has rescued girls as young as 7 from early marriage and put them in school. What I found disturbing is the admission that the young girls are expected to consummate the marriage after their wounds heal. Why would a grown a** man sleep with a girl who is as young as seven? Come on people, this is so 1700's!

Read in the Nation last week, girls as young as 11 are having sex in exchange for body lotion, perfumed soap and sanitary towels. There is also the poverty factor. One girl said the mom cannot afford to buy her sanitary towels and they boyfriend does. And she thanks him in kind.
