Most jobs in the world you get through referral...lets say it is advanced nepotism...United Nations is a family business. It is the way of the world. Accept and move forward.

@Magigi, its okay to get a referral in the context of you letting me know there is a vacancy in your organization, then let me go through the due process set for recruitment and come out top or among the top but not get the job because you are my brother and are the CEO of the organisation, height of stupidity this is, now imagine a whole family is likely to be laid off...

So long as the people hired were qualified to hold the jobs and the vacancies existed, I see nothing 'wrong' with what the management did. There are many Kenyans without jobs and one's first duty is to look after your kin.

As Vinii has stated, this practice happens in most parastatals. If I may call it so, it is a lesser form of corruption.

two wrongs dont make a right....and your statement is shameful to say the least...

It's just my opinion, that's all.

and what will be your opinion on those who sleep their way into jobs/promotions??

NKT!!!!

Sleeping with someone in order to get a job or promotion is unethical as it implies that it is the sé.x that got you the position, rather than your qualifications and experience. In this case, it is equivalent to giving a bribe.

My argument is this: so long as a vacancy exists and the relative is qualified for the post, there's nothing wrong in employing them.

Like this word, can it also be implied that its the fact that you are related to the boss that got you the job??
Can we also argue that the woman or man sleeping with the boss to get a promotion is also qualified for the job and that them having sex is irrelevant here??

You are missing the point here, the problem is not hiring relatives, problem arises due to conflicts of interest, if the guy is a finance officer and the finance manager is the brother, what are the chances the manager can act according without emotions and with objectivity when being his boss??
Most organizations allow relatives to work together only that its known/disclosed and therefore the two cannot work together as in boss and junior to one another, cannot work in different divisions with positions that can easily allow them to collude etc...

It's a well known and accepted fact. These things happen so often in most companies.
Set out to correct the world's wrongs and you will most certainly wind up adding to them.

Let me start with your second point. I agree with you when you say that a relative should not have a supervisory or oversight role over another. Ditto for positions that may allow collusion. I guess that's where a firm's regulations and processes help in minimizing abuse of office.

Regarding your first issue, I would argue that being related to the boss only PUTS YOU IN POLE POSITION but it is your qualifications and experience that (should) get you in the frame for the job. After all, isn't that what networking is all about? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, networking involves cultivating 'productive relationships for employment or business'. In short, knowing the right people in the right places gives you an advantage.

I still maintain that, whether qualified or not, it is unethical and immoral for one to get a job or promotion based on sex. That should always be condemned.

Sindio.

2 ladies in a department and there is an open post for a promotion e.g. manager. Same qualifications. Tie-breaker? The HOD/Director takes the first one to the Tribe; the second one to Sankara. The one who impresses him the most, wins and gets the post.

Ladies who realise early enough the power of the airport, go really far in this world and achieve much more.

Wait, I don't recommend that women should do it!
