I remember some figures from a while back that stated that over 70% of vehicles on our Kenyan roads were Toyota models, over 75% of which were painted white. I don't know if the situation has since changed but the point is if you own a Toyota that is white in color, you're more attractive to thugs because searching for one, even when reported to the authorities is like, well, searching for the raindrop that fell in Aberdares forest on 14th April 1989 and was washed into the Indian Ocean. It's nigh impossible and even with all the tracking devices and technology, our porous borders don't help much. How often have we heard of Prados, RAV 4S and VXs stolen from Msa road while en route to Nbi, driven across the border and eventually sold in DRC? (by the way, DRC is the new market for smartphones stolen in Nbi, it has proved difficult for the culprits to sell them locally coz of ease of traceability via software).

It is for this reason that most people had resorted to painting their vehicle no. on the sides and bonnet to make it conspicuous in the event it had to be searched for, but then it also made you vulnerable since those with ill motives can spot you from afar.

What to do? Since we cannot all keep off Toyota as a brand, it might be a bit reasonable to keep off any that is either white or that other ubiquitous silver-ish color they now come in. A wine red car sure stands out from the crowd and no thug wants that kind of conspicuousness. Just my 2 cents.
