I remember some figures from a while back that stated that over 70% of vehicles on our Kenyan roads were Toyota models, over 75% of which were painted white. I don't know if the situation has since changed but the point is if you own a Toyota that is white in color, you're more attractive to thugs because searching for one, even when reported to the authorities is like, well, searching for the raindrop that fell in Aberdares forest on 14th April 1989 and was washed into the Indian Ocean. It's nigh impossible and even with all the tracking devices and technology, our porous borders don't help much. How often have we heard of Prados, RAV 4S and VXs stolen from Msa road while en route to Nbi, driven across the border and eventually sold in DRC? (by the way, DRC is the new market for smartphones stolen in Nbi, it has proved difficult for the culprits to sell them locally coz of ease of traceability via software).

It is for this reason that most people had resorted to painting their vehicle no. on the sides and bonnet to make it conspicuous in the event it had to be searched for, but then it also made you vulnerable since those with ill motives can spot you from afar.

What to do? Since we cannot all keep off Toyota as a brand, it might be a bit reasonable to keep off any that is either white or that other ubiquitous silver-ish color they now come in. A wine red car sure stands out from the crowd and no thug wants that kind of conspicuousness. Just my 2 cents.

Sasa Red...si its too screaming? Unless its for a lady?smile

That was just an example smile You could go with the various shades of blue for instance, or the current trend of matt black (I don't like it though) or even maroon. Next time ukienda garage, ask the paint guy to show you a certain maroonish whose color code is 481-8481 and tell me if you won't like itsmile smile

Hehehe...I use a bluish...

The best option is to transfer the risk by taking up comprehensive insurance.

By the way will insurance compensate if a stolen car is recovered but missing parts, some of which may be damn expensive?

Not really, a friend of mine was jacked in a 1000cc funcargo never to be found.
Another was jacked in a 3000cc prado.
Xtrails have become favourites also.
Whats next?
Now they are pulling mirrors from mazda demios also!

Mc R, There is a very ready market for Toyos above 2000 ccs. Right from rav4s, klugers, prados, VXes etc. But passo ya 990 ccs? When grabbing your Allion they really dont care whether it is a 1.5, 1.8 or 2.0.

Kamumdu... funcargos were only available in 1300 and 1500 ccs. Anyway, there is always the one off occurrence now and then. The fact still remains that you can be carjacked in ANY car. But the chances of recovering your car decrease when some factors are put into consideration. Sometimes you will be jacked in any car, they will rob you dry and use your car to jack someone else. either by blocking or hitting them from behind. However those strictly after stealing cars would rather hit where they can quickly eliminate their loot. The guys must have had a very ready market for the funcargo. Imagine having to make a gateway in a 1000 cc car when being trailed by highway patrol cars in nissan x trails or those new subarus.
