Truth be told, I also use middle lane if total lanes are more than 2.
I use left when there are only 2 lanes, when the road ahead of me is clear (read "no matatu"). But I shift to right lane immediately I see a matatu in front, overtake and shift again to the left lane. Otherwise, I stick to right lane and maintain topmost speed on that section to avoid obstructing anyone who might want to overtake.
RULE OF THUMB
I don't follow a lorry or matatu.
I don't allow lorry or matatu to trail me too close.
I indicate on time
I check my rear mirror before I brake
I avoid driving too closely together with other cars on high-speed highway
