@Prime - Have you seen that part just after Allsops on your way towards Thika - just before the demolished Nakumatt? The fellow who designed the road must have thought Kenyan drivers are Sunday School teachers! Traffic from service lane joins the main super highway on a down hill section - most vehicles rarely stop! At that section I stick to the outer lane. I've seen two vehicles joining the main super highway at the same time several times! The vehicle in front joins the first lane while the driver of the vehicle behind - normally the route 45 buses - decides not to be 'delayed' by the vehicle in front and directly joins the second lane. At that time you are cruising downhill on the first lane and all over sudden two vehicles from 'nowhere' join the highway and occupy your lane and the one next to you. Woe unto you if you are moving at a far much higher speed than the two vehicles and there are other vehicles on the other lanes which means you can't swerve. I have seen very bad accidents at that point!

And then there are vehicles - especially trucks - that stall especially at night and the bloody driver just leaves it there with no life savers, hazard or anything to show there is a stalled vehicles ahead. And sometimes the vehicle is left on the outer lane! You go up an over pass at 110km/h at night and as you begin your decent, bum!, stalled lorry with no warning signs! Even me - especially at night - I feel safer on the middle lane!

Truth be told, I also use middle lane if total lanes are more than 2.
I use left when there are only 2 lanes, when the road ahead of me is clear (read "no matatu"). But I shift to right lane immediately I see a matatu in front, overtake and shift again to the left lane. Otherwise, I stick to right lane and maintain topmost speed on that section to avoid obstructing anyone who might want to overtake.

RULE OF THUMB
I don't follow a lorry or matatu.
I don't allow lorry or matatu to trail me too close.
I indicate on time
I check my rear mirror before I brake
I avoid driving too closely together with other cars on high-speed highway

I'm tired of fixing broken limbs and necks with screws, plates, nails, bolts and nuts due to "carelessness" and "clever reasoning" on the highway.

Why can't Kenyan drivers just follow the rules on the road?

Kenyans should travel to other countries (like Germany) and see how drivers behave on the highway (Autobahn). No speed limits and fewer accidents. You cruise at 160kph-200kph in your Mercedes Benz E250 from Dusseldorf to Munich (630km) and arrive in 3.5hrs, SAFELY.
