this was mandatory for all flights entering Kenya in the 1980s... we didn't trust anybody's air but our own

Lesotho should be qualified. While you don't need a visa to visit Lesotho - you need a SA air-side transit visa to transit of 'Neighboring countries'. I was once turned back at JKIA for that.
