@kabz, you are in good company. I am searching for reasons why Mandela has near-saint status. So far I have 2 reasons: he was in confinement for 27 years for fighting apartheid and refused to be compromised by the govt to secure his release. Secondly, on being released, he pursued a line of reconcilation even appointing De Klerk as Deputy President in a coalition govt that was all inclusive.

I am sure there were others who were incarcerated maybe even tortured for the same reason.

What he did or went through during the struggle I am sure is not unique to him alone.

Mandela could have been the poster guy, the individual to personify the struggle. To give a human face to the struggle.

He has individualized and appropriated the struggle to himself.

He is human after all.

You are declared dead when the brain dies not when the heart stops beating. Ariel Sharon died long ago and so has Nelson.The machine can keep the heart beating for years but the person will never recover

Next time someone is all over the republic vilifying Moi or Mobutu for their governments' atrocities, I want to hear you guys come up and say, "Oh, see, he can't have been that bad you know. There must have been a lot of other people torturing and plundering with him. He was simply the face of the mess.".

The leader, through his actions and those of his lieutenants, will always take the ultimate blame or credit. Such is the case with Mandela, and Hitler, and Benazir, and Bokasa, and Jesus Christ, and King Leopold...

At one time, Mandela was considered a terrorist the west. After his Nobel prize, America and Britain changed tune. ......One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter

Bro, I have always been curious. I have grown up hearing of how Mandela IS A HERO yada yada yada.......but my little knowledge is that of a guy who spent 27 years in jail and somewhat automatically became a HERO on being released.

When exactly did he become a hero? Kindly direct me to any helpful text or book that may help me appreciate this man more, coz much as I like n respect him, sijawahi elewa kwanini watu wanamuita shujaa........HELP!

@kabz:
Mandela had this belief to fight for what is right, what he felt his people needed, it didn't matter what he had to go through, he just believed and fought for it, he believed that one day the whole south Africa will sit together eat together drink tofether and live together as one no matter what color your skin is......he is basically the face of ending arpatheid in South Africa and the beginning of racial equality in that country.....and when he became the president, served one term and handed over power....as somebody said, you got to read the 'long walk to freedom'.......don't just take the 27years in jail on the face value!!!!!
