I am in the same situation. Did not talk to him from the time results came out till this June. He was in Shaggz but have since enrolled him with AA Driving school, still wondering what to do but just wanted to keep him busy you know....And my househelp..oh my. only hope she'll survive.

Dont think too hard what YOU want him to do. Just expose him to many opportunities that there are in Nairobi, like, get to know what he likes, take him round, like to garages where you take your vehicle, to the restaurant owner that you know, to the fundi who makes your wives clothes, give him some money and tell him to take a walk around the estate and neighboring estates and see what people are doing, then ask him what he would want to do with his life. Whatever he chooses, find someone successful in that field that you know and let him be a kinda mentor to the guy/gal. Support him with what HE wants to do. This is from experience, with heavy losses involved! Do not, and i say again, please do not rebuke him or treat him like a looser. You will kill the remaining self esteem that was left by the grade - "failure system".

If there is a building being built near where you live or a construction project going on then that is the ideal place for him.

His career is in the changarawe, kokoto, mawe za 9 na simiti industry.

Or buy him a mkokoteni. He goes to Ukulima Market very early in the morning kutegea job za kubeba waru na mboga.

Woe unto him if he tries this!!!

@madhaquer has snookered himself. The relatives will be up in arms - "He does not want others to succede", "He thinks he is the only one who can do 'office' jobs", "He is threatened by the progress of others"... bla bla bla.

This can only work when the fellow is self driven. I know a graduate who use to work in a mjengo as he was hustling for a job. Another who was running a vegetable kiosk - wakes up very early in the morning, goes to the market, gets all the stuff back to his kiosk and goes job hunting. In the evening/late afternoon he goes back to run his kiosk. And many more. Today this fellows are very successful! The kiosk owner is trying to give Uhuru compe in land ownership!

But this fellows made the decisions by themselves. The former kiosk owner told me he had made a decision never to live with a relative even for a single day and settled on kiosk ownership in his fifth year [Electrical Engineering] and even did market research on the same. After his last paper he embarked on the kiosk biashara with vigour!

Who really cares what the relatives think? i have a string of relatives who will ask for everything from me since they know i will give, until one day in the year 2009 i realized i had not spent a penny on me except on those around me.
Someone advised me to tie up all the loose monies in something useful, joined chamas left right and center, so now when someone asks for money and i say i do not have, its true, no guilt conscious.
Otherwise Kenyans have a right of using you and taking advantage of you being generous, and dont forget the more you give the more they think you have.
Ole wako kama ulichukua mkopo ukanunua vitz, to relatives a car=riches.

Help the guy if he wants to be helped, i paid for an orphan niece of mine college fees last year only for her to drop out coz she was pregnant, told her its ok to go give birth and continue with her studies, when she went to shagz, she got married and got pregnant with another makanga, now my relatives think i did not take good care of her, that i exposed her to the man who made her pregnant.

Lesson learnt, no matter how much you want to help, even God helps those who help themselves, so the Bible tells me.
What book in the bible and verse was this again???

there is no mention of a book or verse, just the understanding they get from the bible - that story of a guy who hid his talent might point into that direction
OK. Thanks

I cannot but help think of the boy who got a tour of state house recently.

How good is he in academics?

Is he as good in it as he is in the performing arts?

The College of Insurance (COI) has dropped the minimum grade that one could have for them to be allowed to sit for Certificate of Proficiency exam (COP) from KCSE D+ to anything below, including E for Effort. That means anyone can sit for the exam and be allowed to sell insurance.

Some of the top earning sales people are in the insurance industry, so there's hope still

Thanks all for the comments.
I do know from speaking to him and his parents that he is not interested in farming, so it will have to be some artisan school then maybe a small business.
I will give him a couple of weeks before he enrolls in something like driving or computers.

I have found myself in a similar situation twice now. One thing i learnt after both situations,is that sometimes we worry too much about things that haven't happened. I was worried that these youngsters will have a 'failed' life, having failed in KCSE but from experience,i've learnt that anyone can make it in life,if they face it as it comes

Case scenario one: Young man,got a D in first attempt,i was paying his fees,so when i asked him 'Sasa D utapeleka wapi?' he requested that i find it in my heart to let him repeat form 4 and after digging deeper,he told me he wants to pursue something to do with IT. I took him back to school, and he got a C in second attempt. That was 2yrs ago. This June,he has just completed his Diploma in IT and planning to pursue his degree. As it is,he already found a place to work partime(all via his own efforts btw).

Second scenario, was a young lady,i was also paying her school fees, she got a D-. I was pissed.. told her i've done my best, sasa after KCSE,ata yeye she can find a job and learn what life is out here. She did a few menial jobs, poor girl was getting depressed,i enrolled her in a driving school since she wasn't sure what she wanted with her life. She later did a 6month front office course & some computer packages. I realized she's very hardworking and seldom gives up(plus very chap chap),so i started digging around for better jobs. Luckily, she got a chance to go to the UAE,got a good job in a leading hotel(front office section),one year later, she's making serious investments back home and pursuing her studies online

Sometimes when kids get bad grades in school,we're very disappointed as guardians/parents,mainly because we expected them to do better and had invested heavily. But we must accept that not all kids are academically gifted, and sometimes shit happens and kids fail their exams. Does that mean they've failed in life? No,most of them have other talents and passions that if pursued, will take them to greater heights in life

Sit your young man down, ask him what he really is good at,or what he has always wanted to do in life. Listen to him without judging, and use the info he gives you to guide him,as a more mature person, and from an informed perspective. If he's not open with you, find someone who can dig the info from him,in a comfortable way. Even with a D,all is not lost

Best wishes!

Hello! The problem is you care so much about what he is interested in, guess what alot of us don't like going to work, infact alot of us have zero interest in doing what we do but we still show up every morning since that is what we have to do to meet our needs.

For heavenly sake this kid, had a D! Why care about what he is interested in? The kid is lazy because he is used to the easy life, send him back to the village, let him learn first otherwise he won't be responsible, let him take a 2-3yrs break before spending more money on him.

Yes, I see.

I remembered because all wazuans except Tycho and I, I think, were of the opinion that academics are the panacea.

I advocated for trades and professions which I still do as an alternative to scoring high in KCSE and KCPE on case by case basis.

Now I have Leona and Um Sayala stories to back up my opinion that to devour and to finish madaftari in school is not the end but merely one of the many means to the end.
