If there is a building being built near where you live or a construction project going on then that is the ideal place for him.

His career is in the changarawe, kokoto, mawe za 9 na simiti industry.

Or buy him a mkokoteni. He goes to Ukulima Market very early in the morning kutegea job za kubeba waru na mboga.

Woe unto him if he tries this!!!

@madhaquer has snookered himself. The relatives will be up in arms - "He does not want others to succede", "He thinks he is the only one who can do 'office' jobs", "He is threatened by the progress of others"... bla bla bla.

This can only work when the fellow is self driven. I know a graduate who use to work in a mjengo as he was hustling for a job. Another who was running a vegetable kiosk - wakes up very early in the morning, goes to the market, gets all the stuff back to his kiosk and goes job hunting. In the evening/late afternoon he goes back to run his kiosk. And many more. Today this fellows are very successful! The kiosk owner is trying to give Uhuru compe in land ownership!

But this fellows made the decisions by themselves. The former kiosk owner told me he had made a decision never to live with a relative even for a single day and settled on kiosk ownership in his fifth year [Electrical Engineering] and even did market research on the same. After his last paper he embarked on the kiosk biashara with vigour!
Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.

I have tried the 'one on one life is hard' talking approach all through his high school times. But the thing is he just never seemed to take an interest in drama, music events, farming etc.. This is a guy who comes home during the teachers strike with no books yet he has exams in a matter of weeks.

I think I'm still pissed off at his performance but I have looked into several colleges and even NYS will not accept below D+ and I would really like for him to wake up.

@Madhaquer,
A lot of answers have been given out of sheer ignorance (or by those whose "children" still reside in their testicles).Of course,a few have given sensible suggestions and one of them is that you shouldn't be residing with the boy even though this might be too late.Failing an exam does not mean one is a failure in life and the opposite is also true.

Back to what you wanted to know.Someone has suggested that you find a trades course for the young man.I say that is the way to go.There are self employed trades people who are making more money than many graduates here by many kilometres. To give you an example, sometimes last year,i was looking for a coded high pressure welder (Lloyds of London register). We only got one in Kenya and the fellow was so busy, his schedule was taking me a month ahead.I decided to get one from SA and i paid him 600K for 28 hours work. What do you need for that?.Besides this, there are other lucrative techs such as electrical wiring, refrigeration and plumbing.Let nobody discourage you from pursuing a blue collar job for the young man.Indeed,as already happened in Britain, since all Kenyans want the white collar jobs, the blue collar jobs are the place to be in and they will pay.Believe it!
Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

The tragedy of our education system is that it is too exam oriented and attempts to make all of us academics oblivious to our individual talents and preferences, which is a pity really.

Perhaps the right place for you to begin would be to ask yourself, besides reading, what else did he participate in while in school- games? Any extra-curricular activities? Therein might be a clue as to what his talents and/or interests really are.

While at it by the way, what has he told you that he himself would like to do? If he's just recently finished his high school, give him a maximum of about 7 months post high school after which he should have decided what he wants to do; it took me about 6months after high school before deciding I ever wanted to see a book again.

Maybe as he goes about making up his mind, you might wanna consider some form of apprenticeship for him in a variety of fields. I see young men at my pal's garage doing that all the time, just to keep themselves busy.

I love and admire people who hit rock bottom but strive to prove that they can still make it.
He may have gotten an E, it doesn't matter, but what is he doing about it? He needs a change of attitude.
The reason he is comfy is because everything is at his disposal.

People sell sweets, newspapers, njugu, maize, to earn shillings, so he has no excuse whatsover to warm his lazy butt.
He must develop interest and that will come if that tv goes.

Hello Wazuan's

There is a family member who got a D in KCSE and I have been tasked with the job of getting him to a level of where he will either be employable or self sufficient.

I am looking for ideas and opinions because apart from watching TV I don't think there is any other thing of interest this guy has.

He can join the police force. I think their minimum qualification is D.

So you scored a D but at least you beat @qooler.

D? thats a pass. I got a D- and am still here smile

ATI NINI?

May be true, since academic failure doesn't mean failure in life. Neither does academic success guarantee a succesful life.

@qooler, D-? kwani uliandika tu jina ALAFU ukapatiana makaratasi? GFF
