@ segemia,
Let's not allow the past and history hold us back. Someone asked what's ailing Kenya on another thread and I think it's our past.
Here's a quote I love from Obama's speech to the muslims. For a moment I thought he was talking to us Kenyans.

'I know there are many — Muslim and non-Muslim — who question whether we can forge this new beginning. Some are eager to stoke the flames of division, and to stand in the way of progress. Some suggest that it isn't worth the effort — that we are fated to disagree, and civilizations are doomed to clash. Many more are simply skeptical that real change can occur. There is so much fear,so much mistrust. But if we choose to be bound by the past,we will never move forward. And I want to particularly say this to young people of every faith,in every country — you, more than anyone, have the ability to remake this world. All of us share this world for but a brief moment in time. The question is whether we spend that time focused on what pushes us apart,or whether we commit ourselves to an effort — a sustained effort — to find common ground,to focus on the future we seek for our children, and to respect the dignity of all human beings.'

The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. The second best time is now.

In the short multiparty history of this country,it matters little what you call a party. Remember FORD,DP,NDP,NARC and even KANU? What united ODM may be done under another name and around another individual. Is it worth it,really?

@ all,

let us look closely at the major parties' formations and death and presidential candidatures since the first multiparty elections in 1992,

1990,

Only Kanu,DP and Ford were significant

later: FORD split into FORD and FORD Kenya

1992

Elections:

Kanu (Moi) Vs Ford (Matiba),DP (Mwai Kibaki),Ford Kenya (Jaramogi Ajuma Oginga Odinga)

Later: FORD-Kenya ( headed by Wamalwa) split into FORD-Kenya (headed by Wamalwa) and National Development Party (NDP) (headed by Raila)

1997

Elections:

KANU (Moi) Vs Ford Asili (Matiba withdrew),Ford Kenya (Kijana Wamalwa) Ford People (Simeon Nyachae),NPK (Charity Ngilu),NDP (Raila Odinga)Safina (Leaky),
later NDP is swallowed by KANU

2002

prelude: National Party of Kenya (NAK) = (Mwai Kibaki-DP,FORD-Kenya-Wamalwa,NPK (Chality Ngilu),Ford People (Simeon Nyachae)

Enters RAO & company with no party: NAK + RAO & co. = National Rainbow Coalition NARC is born

Elections:

KANU (Uhuru Kenyattai) Vs NARC (Mwai Kibaki)

2007

ODM (Raila Odinga),PNU (Mwai Kibaki)
PNU = ODM-Kenya,NARC,NARC Kenya,DP,Safina,Shirikisho,Ford Kenya

The Question

Apart from KANU,which of the above parties has lasted more than 15 years steadily building up its strength in national politics and a healthy personnel portfolio?

Answer: NONE!!!!,

Conclusion: What we have are actually outfits not parties.

I stand to be corrected.

@ all,

if i read segemia's chronology of elections in kenya,i can't help wondering why in the last 4 general elections we have been having the same pigs contesting...they get recycled and repackaged under different outfits and eventually presented to us as the best candidates...What new things or policies would they offer....ZERO!!!!!

@ murenj

i am not seing that happening...

segemia,

from your history of parties it seems that the Odinga family is a party.....always a major player in General Eletions!!!!

@ macreggae,

Odinga's can best be described as political prostitutes. the reason is that they have never formed a party that lasted more than one election cycle (5 years).

in 1990 they were there in FORD and before 1992 they were in FORD-Kenya:

After 1992 they damped FORD-Kenya and bought NDP (from mr Oludhe). later they dissolved NDP and joined KANU.

just before 2002,they had no party and they decided to join NAK which became NARC.

After 2002,Orange Democratic Movement was made after the referendum and registered by imanyara as ODM. Odingas were in NARC during this time.

A couple of months before 2007 general elections, the Odingas left NARC to Ngilu and had no party once again to contest the elections with. So they went to imanyara and bought the ODM party which later gave birth to ODM-Kenya.

In short odingas have just been forming some outfits and not parties!!!.
