The Artcaffe Family, would like to respond to the Facebook-generated account of what happened at the Village Market Artcaffe Bakery on June 18, 2013.

A customer approached our Village Market branch bakery for his regular purchase of croissants. He was sold a large number of croissants, approximately 50 per cent of the remaining stock. We were happy to have his business; the client was immediately served as per his order.

On noticing the large size of the order, the branch manager advised the customer that in future it would help Artcaffe if the customer made larger orders in advance.

Advanced orders help the bakery plan for the greater need, ensuring that pastries remain available for take-away and in-person customers.

The suggestion was not well received leading to a minor disagreement in which voices were raised. The client was asked to step out and calm down as he was interfering with other customers who were having their breakfast. He left and came back into the restaurant after a few minutes where he had a fruitful discussion with the management team before leaving with his croissants as per order.

In the end the matter was resolved amicably. The manager and customer shook hands and the customer stated that he would continue to be an Artcaffe customer.

NO arrest or threat of arrest occurred during or after the incident.

The disagreement was based purely on the size of the order and NOT on race.

As a Kenyan company we do not tolerate discrimination in any form in our establishment. We employ and support over 550 staff members and their extended families, living and working here in Nairobi.

We work very hard to ensure that our customers get great food and service every day.

Where we have an incident of poor client service we use it as a learning experience to ensure that we improve our customer experience. We encourage customers who have received poor service to lodge a complaint with us to enable us improve our services so that the experience is never repeated.

Artcaffe is and will continue to tirelessly work to improve our service.

We thank all our loyal customers who have stood by us and continue to show us their love and support. We strive to continue to provide you with the best service and food possible and look forward to continuing our lasting friendship.

hmmm... what about the barrage of ever increasing claims now surfacing? they cannot spin this.

Art Caffe is owned by the same idiots who own Caffeserie in Mombasa.

They are jews,,who think they special than other beings.

Advise all your friends to never visit such places where racism is advocated

I disagree - I urge many of us to visit, buy a single thing and bangaiza for an hour then record the outcome. Staying away by people of Ngozi nyeusi and Nywele Ngumu is exactly what they want! I am about to become a "customer"! Kuna moja kwa disputed territory kati ya Kenya na Rongai! (galleria).

Eventually they will get annoyed and seat you somewhere, when they do just order like 2 coffees and 20 waters then drink that for like 5 hours, always politely asking for refills. Make sure you give them no valid reason to kick you out, that way if they do kick you out CNN is on speed dial, I wish ningekuwa Kenya, wangejua that fufu ni cassava. And tipping is not a must, you only tip when you have received good service, 10% is the standard, when you get bad service leave some pennies. If more Kenyans stood up for their rights, they will realize they are better off treating you well. They want you to get pissed off and never come back, that's why more and more people should visit the placeand order one item, there's nothing worse than a full business premise with little or no revenue!

indeed... boycotting won't work. Occupying will. Mimi naenda kuwachokoza!

Masukuma ukienda enda with a bunch of people and order the cheapest thing on the menu, then sit there for a long time! In the restaurant business seats are like gold, the longer you sit there without ordering more stuff, the more money they lose, so ukikuwa na kerende it will hurt them where it counts the most; their wallet!! People should stop bothering about complaints of racism, they will never change tact, instead hurt them where it hurts most #economichitman

Passed at Tuskys Taj Mall and croissants were flying off the shelves. Seems everyone now wants to know what's so special about the pastries. This saga has provided excellent marketing for the product.

True. The guy was bought out by ArtCyberCaffe to cool down the issue.

But the racism issue MUST be true since this stories began in 2011. Just google 'Artcaffe racism.'

Get serious @dunkang @Mcreggae @maka...

The tweets were posted at the onset of the whole saga yesterday at 10am in a period of 15 minutes. You clearly see Robert Alai's response castigating the chap for changing his story.

1. Koki Mutua's (the sister) post began "ARTCAFFE::: My brother just got arrested 5 min ago!!" posted after that started on a falsehood!
2. Even the mention of 1 dozen (instead of 8) croissants was incorrect

Those are the unpleasant facts, whether ArtCaffe are 'racist' or not.

Right, just traced a better version of events, as clarified by the sister; yesterday early afternoon.

Koki Mutua Okay let me Clarify this story... When i was called there was alot of noise and Robert alai and i were getting different stories which happens when things are going crazy so bare with us.

He wanted to buy croissants from the village branch. 8, then as the girl is packing the manager shows up and decides he cannot have as many as he wants because he (manager) has said so. So they begin to argue the manager pushes my brother out of there restaurant and starts insulting him telling him the way he is the owner of art café and how he is a black boy!

So security for village comes, then this manager calls diplomatic police on my bro and it is all hell at village.

But the police knew what was going on and asked my bro to just leave the issue. This guy then realised things were going down pretty fast so he made a casual apology and disappeared...
