Ksh will stay weak. Note that

tea farmers will get more $ but for less tea
Most nrks are based in UK/US,both experiencing unemplyoment and low house prices
Capital inflows (into NSE and wider economy) are still low.

What if Max Keiser and Mark Faber predictions (both renowned economists) come true,again? Will the shilling strengthen further???!!! Would you hold Kes,USD or EURO??

@Mainat

In your post below,are you suggesting that the shilling is not strengthening? Lets say weak is relative but i dont think the shilling is weak if you compare it with the previous tradings of the year. it's today trading at 74.5 to a dollar or so which is the highest it has hit this year i believe. The last time it traded on this range was before October last year. Infact it has risen by almost 2 dollars since mid august!

@kishindo;

suppose you can run around the forex bureax in town and get one that will buy at 75 from you....sh150k in total.

Now put that KES in a money-market unit trust for one month and get say 9%pa. In November you will probably have sh151,125.

To make the same but speculating on the forex rate,the USD will have to climb to at least sh75.5625.

So,do you think that is a reasonable expectation; that it will rise to sh75.5625?

I am still trying to figure out the reasons behind the shilling is gaining strength especially now when the agricultural activities have been badly battered by the drought and i am finding none....there has been no major changes in the fundamentals...the dollar has simply lost in the international money market just as the shilling lost against the rand....

I still hold my theory that Obama has printed some dollars! No proof though,so it remains a theory.

@ Jerry
It is true the federal reserve is printing money .ALOT! Only thing is that it goes by the name quantitative easing. They are using this newly created money to buy up toxic agency (mainly mortgage) debt from the chinese and other central banks on condition that they buy treasuries ( US govt debt) thus creating the impression that these central banks are buying treasuries. Smart fellas.

@Solloh - I hope more people see through this fog. Debt monetization is an issue that will won't go away. Read Prof. Paul Krugman's articles in the NY Times in 2005 and 2009. Quote,his 2009,August 28 blog '...Which brings me to a question a number of people have raised: maybe we can pay the interest,but what about repaying the principal?' http://krugman.blogs.nyt...-burden-of-debt/?apage=2

Kenya remains a net importer... and unless it rains... the KES is on a one way trip down... A country that imports massive amounts of food (without any other significant exports is f****d). Kenya is not Singapore or UAE or UK...
