To prevent it from breaking down when dipped into the soup. Try it for yourself.

When you squeeze, it makes it compact and remain solid after wetting it in soup.

Otherwise, as you lift it into your mouth, it will break half-way, dropping back into the plate, splashing the soup onto you!!

And that way its able to hold the stew better

Then we have those who pinch a big piece of ugali, dip part of it in the soup and eat, while leaving half of the ugali pinch in their palm....why?

I'm here. Tho' an Ugali from Central might leave you with messy hands while one from Western make your grip steel!

Have you noticed the softer the ugali, the more of it you eat? Just like fufu

I can't believe people don't know the answer to this question.

People squeeze Ugali to look for Onyango.

Long long time ago there was a feast...... I don't recall it may have been a wedding ..... anyhow a very big Ugali was prepared for the feast. It was so big that people eating it on one side could not see the other people eating from the other side. Then someone discovered that Onyango had gone missing .... someone thought that he may have somehow disappeared into the ugali and so all the guests were asked to look for him before they eat their ugali..... and since he has never been found we have been looking for him ever since.

I remember hearing this story as a small boy around a smoky fireplace as we all got ready to dive into the ugali that was just being funuliwad from a sooty black sufuria. All the ugali was placed in the center and we all got our own mbogas in little bakulis. Everyone had to cut his piece bare handed look for Onyango and proceed to eat his mboga. There were many ugali stories and techniques. There were those who as soon as the ugali was served started giving stories to distract other ugali eaters so that they zubaa while the story teller munched away.... there were also stories of people hiding ugali when they heard guests coming.....There is a famous one I remember where a guy heard a knock on the door just as he had uncovered his ugali to eat so he quickly hid the ugali under the bed and let his friend in. This friend could smell the ugali in the house but when he sat and sat and no ugali was being offered he started giving stories of giants about how he had escaped death narrowly when he came across a huge snake that was like "from here" he said while stumping his foot "upto where that ugali is" he said while pointing at the ugali under the bed.................

If these are the things that bother you, then I understand why your colleague scored a Dminus in KCSE.
