Njunge, why hold on a stock 4 that long. R u considering time value of money. The real value is actually very low when u do ur math considering all relevant factors

Njunge is a buffet, an investor buys companies he believes in not a trader

At what point then does he realise its value. It more or less sounds like he has an emotional attachment to this stock, else, i cant seem to make sense of it.

Let me ask do you mean value = cash? As in liquid money?

Nope, if u r to do computation in terms gains over the years but considering each year separately, u will find that Njunge could have enjoyed value (NOT CASH), if he disposed off the stock, may be, 5 years ago when inflation rate, as one factor, ws lower than today or tomorrow...

May be the question should be, has the compounding effect of NMG beaten the inflation rate?

@Gadaffi maybe you are struggling a little with the Math involved here...

Lets say you had 1,000 shillings in 1990 and bought 100shares of NMG at 10bob...

Without taking into consideration any splits, bonuses and dividends your 100shares would be worth 35,000 shillings today at 350bob...

That said, are you trying to imply that 35,000 shillings today is equivalent to 1,000 shillings in 1990???

Applause Applause Applause @ kularaha and @njunge, it has always been said that over the long term, investment in stock market beats all other investments and comes only second to a business that is making profits. Though I know other stocks could have made losses over the long term, I feel emboldened to hold on to my stocks for retirement.

@ Guru, I have said it and will say it again; do not let the many digits impress you, its not about the cash, its about its value. My parents bought a plot in the 90's at 15k but the market value today (as per last year) was 3.8m. You had value holding 1,000 in 1990 than holding 35,000 in 2013.

@Gadaffi, I must say am not in the loop here. I believe @Njung'e is enjoying all the dividends for the said time and the value of the investment has grown with time as well!

@Gadaffi I wasnt born yesterday and neither were a lot of wazuans..

Do not use land as an example of inflation but instead you should use general goods and services to calculate inflation!

Are you trying to tell me that if walked into Uchumi with 1,000 shillings in 1990 you could buy the same basket of goods that you can buy in 2013 with 35,000??? Get serious

in 1990, 1 dollar was ksh 19.63. Today, the same dollar is worth Ksh 84.95 Does this not mean that the value of 1 Ksh then is Ksh 4.3 today?

Shame on you Are we comparing oranges and mangoes now? What difference would it make if he sold the share in 2000? Are you trying to say he would have made more money then? .

Depends where you bought the plot. Just like what shares were purchased. What is the value of a plot in Rift Valley where PEV took place? Many have been abandoned.
