Dumb move. Free and Open Source Software is the way to go for resource-constrained countries like ours.

free as in freedom or free as in free lunch? smile

Usually both.

opensource normally guarantees the first not the second - anyway it depends on the licensing!

You are right. But you will agree with me that nearly all open source software is available for general purpose use in one form or another for absolutely free, won't you?

I use ubuntu instead of madirisha. Absolutely free. Libre Office for word processing and spreadsheet and firefox as browser. Only drawbacks are powerpoint (have to hand it to monster MS) and lack of drivers for my MFP printer.

Hmm, LibreOffice Impress pretty much meets all my presentation needs. But then again, I don't make presentations often enough to be a good judge.

I believe in using the correct tools for the correct job. I use OS everyday! I also use proprietary software daily - some paid and some free. I tend not to pick sides since lets face it - just because its opensource its not that I have the time to change the code. if its proprietary - its not mine. all software i write is proprietary regardless of the tools i use to write. but I am a madirisha 7 user by default with putty installed to connect to our servers.

For once someone has hit spot on ..not having buildings and infrastructure has no bearing one ones eventual nurturing and maturity of their talent, many of the professional and achievers around today owe it majorly to their own determination and not buildings or quality teachers ..free laptops will be a means not an end to talent nurturing ..of FOSS vs Microsoft merits is inconsequential the end of it all is to achieve the ultimate end ..having the software and hardware delivered , me thinks this laptop thing is an equalizer that eliminates the elitist inequalities that come with a colonial system of elite privileged "national schools" which favored a few. Free laptop + safaricom dongle + google = access to resources previously unavailable to anyone in machinani
