I have never taken a bank loan...I want to buy land, and the way I see it I can secure a bank loan. Is it advisable to purchase land using a bank loan? Presumably land in Nairobi and its environs.

Do a detailled research on the facilities you can use in the available banks, then get the best offer.
With land its hard to save to buy because the land is also appreciating. i advice buying now then you accelerate the repayments to the shortest time possible, say you take a loan for 60 months and repay in 12 months.

Watch the interest. Is it Fixed or it's like that Michuki-liver?
Have you thought of going through a sacco?

Check out Mhasibu or Kuscco but you ought to be a member, save for six months, etc.
