from ur list I'd go for the xtrail. however i'd throw in an ISUZU WIZARD and NISSAN TRIBUTE in the comparison list. anyone with first hand experience with the WIZARD?

Dont touch the Freelander (especially the 2001-2002 models). Too many problems and the parts/service are expensive. Test drive one (long distance) or get stuck in Thika Road jams and it feels like driving a tractor. I would not recomend it to my worst enemy. My experience however is with the 2001 model and they could have improved on the subsequent models.

Forester any day.Nissan Xtrail have too many fatal accidents. First of all, they are very fast vehicles made of very light materials(Fibre glass at the front) Word has it that they were withdrawn from the presidential escort for killing many a president men. Witnessed a few accidents myself.
@ Sasha,yes,Forester is a safer 4x4,and a fast one too.

@Mr.Tea: Really? Didn't know that! Many of my buddies with Foresters say they would never repeat the mistake of buying one. Only one says he loves his, which is a turbo, but thats because he's a speed demon.

Iganamagana - maybe the earlier years had issues. Try Freelander 2004. Love it and would not exchange it for any of the others above.

And maybe it is just me but the Forrester does not look aesthetic at all. (Yeah I consider looks too).

@Sasha,What reason do they give for it? I know its a little heavy on the fuel(not exceptionally),other than that dunno much else about the car.

@Mr.Tea: Thats their main beef i.e. fuel! Then it is too low. If you put heavy duty 7-coil springs, it becomes unstable. And also for 1800/2000cc, it shouldn't really be that heavy. That thing is nearly as heavy (if not heavier) as the Xtrail!

X-trail iis an excellent car, recently got a manual .. a very spacious, practical vehicle with above average performance, fuel consumption is better than the range of 4 x 4's mentioned and fair on maintaince ...

As for safety, got front and side airbags, pretty light body too as mentioned but its all about how u handle it ....

My 2 cents

I list them Below in Order of Prefference. (from a car dealers point of view)

1. From that List i would take Forester. Take the 2002 Model SG5 Grade. In this one the Turbo has a better fuel economy that the non turbo in long distance. And the Turbo mechanism is perfect. Speed and stability is assured and the car looks better than the older model. Would Cost you Approx 1-1.2M

2. Xtrail. 2002 Model isnt bad. But stability is inferior. Body shape and extras are good. Price 1.1-1.3M

3. Pajero IO. Okay car. Dont expect so much also. Price 1M

4. Freelander. 2002 model and below has problems. So you will have to pick a higher model like 2004 to get a good car. The 2004 Model is excellent.

i hear someone talk od Mazda tribute. Id keep of that cause of the newness of the model. Wait until you see several on the road meaning spares will be more available. Price range 800K

Google around as well - there's some website I'd seen comparing these four - X-Trail,CRV,RAV4 and Forester. I'm not sure which came out tops but it was dependent on the terrain and the use the vehicle was put to.

The X-Trail is about 1400kg so about the same weight as the Subaru.

Beware there's a GT version of the X-Trail and several non turbo modifications

Power wise for the 2002 models

X-Trail - 147 bhp
X-Trail GT - 276 bhp
Forester SG5 X20 - 134 bhp
Forester SG5 XT & SG5 Cross Sport - 216 bhp
RAV4 (not too sure of this) - should be 2 editions: i think 2L and 1.8L (149 bhp and 123 bhp)

Not sure about Freelanders - but there was a top gear review for these that really rubbished the first freelander and the same guys have some positive reviews for the freelander 2. I would worry about costs

The other thing I would look at is petrol vs diesel (option of Turbo Diesel).

There's also the ISUZU BIGHORN which some friends of mine recently purchased and are giving positive reviews.

Thanks guys for this insight. From whats emerging, its like:-

1. Forrester - Hard Terrain
2. Xtrail - Could be better for Town areas
3. io - not much to talk about
4. Frelander - Not very clear, but avoid earlier versions.
