@Braza; the PM did talk about their plight while 'flagging-off' the tenants. He said that GoK will look into ways of compensating them for the lost land.

Surely, seeing that people have started moving into the new houses,I have no doubt that GoK is serious about the Nubians

Ok McReggae! But that's a policy issue for SK...You see they allow people to delete their posts.

I have also realised that I shouldn't have deleted the two posts but that's the problem with computers..it's gone.

Sad that the middo crass stole the new houses from the slum dwellers. Just look at all those cars kwa parking. Unless the the slum dwellers bought cars after moving to canaan.

@ jaggernut,thank u.
There was a feature about this 'theft' on tv last year.
'A slum lord' would pay for a number of houses, then rent them out at a higher price to middle class thus blocking out the poor.
But a typical real slum dweller will not want such a house cz it comes with its own costs.
That aside,Upgrading the place of living will not result in an an upgrade of the standard of living. The latter should have come fast.

'Slum upgrade' is a self contradicting idea. I can't imagine how a good slum looks like.

And people will always take advantage of such ill adviced moves by government.

LOL,You've made me think.

Quote:
Slum upgrading consists of physical, social, economic, organizational and environmental improvements to slums undertaken cooperatively and locally among citizens, community groups, businesses and local authorities.
The main objective of slum upgrading is to alleviate the poor living standards of slum dwellers.

Well, then I think our upgrade left out the most important of all which is Economic Improvement.
And as a result,a small slum is upgraded into a bigger cz the lifestyles and living conditions remain the same.

The poor guy using firewood as fuel cz he can't afford paraffin will move into the flat with his firewood.
So will the poor guy who cant afford tissue.I leave that to your imagination.

Rural-urban migration betrays an economic system that is essentially flawed. It is here that Mugabe scores high marks with his land reforms and the demolition of slums.

How can Kenya solve this problem? We need a modified ujamaa system that will enable the poor to buy and develop land at their own pace.

REF-TZ.
Quote:
Cons of Ujamaa
Transportation networks declined drastically through neglect
Industry and banking was crippled
Left the country dependent on international aid

Modified maybe.

most houses in the slums are owned by Rich guys who can afford to build good houses.
if the government wanted to deal with slums it would just target the slum Landlords give them title deeds if the land isn't a public utility. then force them to build decent houses with demolition ultimatum.
