It looks like NBK was already enjoying the benefits of cheap deposits but still no change d'oh!

Surely, how COULD NBK enjoy cheap deposits in FY '12 that amounted to a over 200% increase over FY '11?? smile

The downside with NBK customer deposits is that half are invested in government securities while only the other half is put in loans and advances. Worse, the bonds are HTM (Held to Maturity) and yielding low returns.

^ Interesting aspersion that seeks to describe a fully fledged commercial bank's balance sheet structure as somewhat a non-deposit taking MFI. smile

@comrade. Under constant attack and scrutiny. Just give it one year and well see what peeps will be saying then. Investors have to be prepared to go against the crowd sometimes.

It's always rewarding betting against the crowd's extreme sentiment, but on this one I need to see H1 2013 esp that NPL item.

Hehee being in touch with the people, "open door policy" Obiter Dictum smile, GoK's 20B Bond to NBK in '07 was to be redeemed in four parts & if my calculations are correct, the 3rd part worth 5.04B should come through this year leaving the last 6.07B for later. That's lending/trading gun powder for a more aggressive NBK as the new management is putting forward. I rest it for now. Let's see...

@Comrade Cde Monomotapa, only KES 5B of HTM Bonds are maturing within 2 years. The rest KES 20.7B (not a mere KES 6.07B as you insinuate) are around to haunt you. I will do a sensitivity analysis on the impact of the maturing KES 5B bond on the banks performance but truth is that the current state of Loan to Deposit ratio of 51.4% against sector average of 82.2% is not good for NBK. Alot of good money is tied in those HTM bond

@mwekezaji - Though NBK lucked out getting the 20bn coz it was lent without proper documents & NBK was 'saved' [bailed out] due to political reasons.

Lucky for NBK they are government bonds so I believe they can be used to offset the requirement for NBK to hold government securities. The nature of the Bonds [unless exempted] does not allow NBK to sell them.
