If you were fortunate enough to catch CNN's Christiane Amanpour interview with Mugabe,you will bear me out that this was quite a show.I like the steely character that is R.Mugabe and the fact that he refuses for anyone to put him down.
He may have failed on many fronts,but the guy shone in this moment. Lets just say than he trounced his opponent,whoever he was......

Missed the actual interview but I understand Bwana Mugabe was no pushover and brought the interviewer from utopia back to mother earth by demonstrating that the West is not exactly the epitome of democratic ideals. Regardless of the perceived 'evil-ness' of the interviewee,a journalist must assume a position of neutrality; not come across as a grassroots activist for some political or social cause. Amanpour with all her credentials falls flat on that aspect quite often nowadays. Her questions to the Iranian president a while back come to mind.

@Adept,
I couldn't agree with you more.Amanpour has changed from the award-winning journalist that she once was,to something else.I have always believed that there is clear difference betwwen professional journalism and advocacy. Hers has been teetering with every interview. Wonder whose fort she's been holding?

I saw the interview and sadly Amanpour was regurgitating the western point of view ad nauseam....I really wish more people could watch the Zeitgeist Addendum...it helps illustrate how western interests can sometimes bring down a government that refuses to prostitute itself and cede control of natural resources. Many people do not know that Zim has uranium,plutonium and diamonds - that the west would like to control. Anglo American used to be huge in Zim - not sure abt now.

So when I see Ranneburger issuing threats,its really because our leaders have refused to work in their interests (we all remember the early NARC days when british tenders were cancelled - landrover,navy,etc) and how Edward Clay started foaming at the mouth.) Many people also do now know that Comrade Bob was decorated by Her majesty after independence...

the guy was regarded as the as the epitome during his hey days when joined the biggest office in 80's. infact,his radical transformation then brought great amiable changes in education,agriculture and mining,with a vibrant economy. today,there are just so many graduate doctors and lawyers in Zimbabwe than any other course,and more than any other sub Saharan country.

Big mistake Amanpour made,she wasn't prepared for that interview,and President Mugabe took full advantage.Quite embarrasing.

Now,the real puppet is Fareed...I think his resident status depends on how much he mouths negatively on anything 'foreign'

While I did not like the way Amanpour conducted the interview,I disagree with your verdicts on the way Mugabe handled himself. The Guy was obviously uncomfortable and was at pains to explain himself. He was at times near stammering. This was not the self assured Mugabe we know. He looked like a child talking to a teacher.

I didn't watch the interview but it brings back to mind the guy of HardTalk on BBC who tried the same thing with Mugabe and found him a hard nut to crack,he came off as condescending as he tried to impose his views on Mugabe who was more than equal to the task.

As I watched that interview,I felt pity for Zimbabwe,Mugabe by all standards is brilliant,but running down a country that at some point was the food basket of Africa as he has is inexcusable,Western propaganda and interests aside. I stand corrected...

@Buster you said 'He was at times near stammering' - nay. I think even you would reach a point where words fail you,especially when enraged or when having to repeat yourself - I'd like to think those moments when Mugabe faltered he was really livid...I also find myself stammering when I am really apocalyptically PISSED off.

....and our prezzo... has he ever answered any question from journalist to get to know what he thinks of the issues of the day. The only time I saw him demand questiions from journalist was when he was cornered by his wife to make it clear that his dick belongs to only one woman. Mugabe can face any journalist to defend his stand and actions...what about our dear president?
