I need help.

My cuzo has been having "mwashos" just at his bladder especially when passing urine since 2011. The condition was diagnized as "urinary tract (bacterial) infection" & has since been on Antibiotics. But the pain keeps recurring. Of late the pain has even been affecting the kidney. Test have shown that the kindeys are still ok & doctors say this may be due to the healing process. Pls advise on how this infection can be cured.Sad

Has he been to a Urologist or GP?
If a GP try a urologist there must be an underlying reasons as to why the bacteria come back from time to time.

He has seen both. The GP has since recommended several antibiotics but there was one "Zinnat", that worked wonders as the pain subsidized for abt 4 months only to resurface again. Our guess was we should go for another dose of the same to completely clear the bacteria. But alas, this is a grug that can only be bought after a Doc's recommndation. So the GP refused, saying that he cant do "Zinnat" a second time as he considered is risky (Body resistance). So he reffered us to a urologist for lower abdomen "pictures". This revealed some groeth at he junction btn the urethra & the bladder (Doctors forgive my description). The Urologist decided another round of antibiotics as he monitors the situation awaiting a scopic test (probing photography).

@Behemoth, I asked this not out of jest, but because it is important.

UTIs present differently in men than in women. The female urethra is only 4cm while the male one is 20cm. Age is also an important risk factor.

I'm assuming your cousin is a man. Adult.

-Has he ever been catheterised? A rubber pipe passed through to help in voiding urine?
-Is he of an age where the prostate could be enlarged? >50yrs.
-Kidney stones? Trauma between the legs? STIs?

The major cause of recurrent or complicate UTIs in adult men is obstruction. Either a stricture, a large prostrate, or as seen from your imaging tests, vesicoureteric reflux due to obstruction at the point where the ureter enters the bladder.

Surgery is warranted for these conditions. The urologist/urosurgeon (+ nephrologist, +radiologist) will make this decision after ultrasound and/or cystoscopy and deteriorating renal function.

Make haste. His kidneys are at risk.

Let his wifey massage the balls with a soft warm white towel to soothe the pains, although this should be done 4 hours before landing since too much heat kills the passengers.

This very true and i remember you saying that there is a growth and that might be the cause of the recurrent episodes. All in all he needs to get hold of a good urologist to sort out the problem which might be probably require surgery.

Boss, there is alot of joy my side of the divide. See, I'm not skirt chasing, drinking myself silly, treating diseases, paying heavily for sins et all instead I'm travelling, enjoying friendships and family the right way, eating good food the right way (very expensive thing especially in Nairobi). Basically living a stress free life. And I don't even worry about tomorrow because I believe in the creator of tomorrow. Now tell me about your exciting life.

In deed. My Brother-in-Law has renal failure. He has been on dialysis for the last 6 years. Because of his condition he knows the best cardiologists, Physicians and urologists in the country. If you want he can offer advice.

UTI is absolutely hard to treat especially for Men but it is also very dangerous and a lot of care needs to be taken. But it has a cure so don't worry but take great action.

@jguru, Thanks. He is a male, 30 yrs.

To ua Qs, As in blue;

-Has he ever been catheterised? A rubber pipe passed through to help in voiding urine?

Well at the radiologist, he once told me that a pipe was passed thru the penis to to suck urine before a some photos were taken. At this point the radiologis showed him some traces of tissues sucked from the bladder in which the doc told him these were the healing remnants of the infection. It was at thi s point that the photos revealed a darkish spot at the junction between the urethra & bladder.

- Is he of an age where the prostate could be enlarged? >50yrs.

-Kidney stones? Trauma between the legs? STIs?
I may not be sure coz when the condition began, he was staying in college.

The test with the catheter is called a voiding (micturating) cystourethrogram. Fill the bladder with dye, ask to pee, observe for reflux.

He probably has a blockage at the entry of the urethra into the bladder. An infection he might have had in the past might have caused this; and the infections he is having now are due to bacteria forming at that junction. Urine stays too long in his bladder, providing an essential culture medium for bacteria. The obstruction may also be causing pooling of urine in his ureters and the kidneys. Hydro-ureters and hydro-nephrosis are a major cause of kidney failure. Trust me, you DO NOT want to have a renal patient in your house. It will affect your life for the foreseeable future.

He will need another comprehensive cystoscopy, renal ultrasound and VCUG done by an experienced radiologist at a proper medical center. And you need to explain your concerns to your urologist. @chepkel, give her the doctors' list.

Prostatitis can happen in a 30yr old.

Acute Prostatitis resolves quickly in a short period of time with no recurrence and full recovery.

Chronic Prostatitis presents the same as what @Behemoth has explained. It is very difficult to treat (8wks of antibiotics + prostatic massages ;-)). Recurrence happens for all treated patients. The tests ordered by your doctor should define the course of management for your cousin.
