@ wanyo

if you delete the prefetch contents,do you mean it will make your machine faster...?

i highly doubt,even though i am not a computer wizard,i think the prefetch folder saves the shortcut to most of the applications used and deleting it would mean that the processor will be opening programs from their original locations and not the shortcut folder...

concerning your internet disconnecting frequenty,open 'my network places' on the desktop then click 'view network connections'. If there is a connection called Z-connect,its a virus. You need avira antivirus to remove that virus. Or alternatively make the virus work for you by editing the dial up number on that connection to *99# and connect to the net using z-connect instead of clicking connect on the modem dashboard software

@Kamaa you could be right per say. It only helps the computer to boot a bit faster.

but this is troubleshooting step often performed on slow computers- to delete all the files in this directory since it can often contain prefetched files that are no longer being used.

@Tebes,how did it go.

@all

Thanks for the generous responses. I actually deleted most of the programs that I have downloaded in the past that were not vital,and then installed Avira Antivirus. Upon finishing installation,I run a complete system scan and found a number of viruses/trojan horses/worms which the previous AVG antivirus could not detect. Its now back to normal except for the battery which I intend to replace soon. When not on AC power,the battery lasts only for 30 minutes. Its 2 years 8 months old,and never been replaced. Have tried discharging it completely and then charging again but couldnt help.

Good call on Avira. Keep away from Norton - it's like the Vista of antivirus software.

People,if your computer is connected to the internet,you really need to install a good anti-spyware program - MalwareBytes Anti-Malware is my recommendation. It catches malware that antivirus programs can't catch as well as rogue registry entries. Periodically cleaning out temporary files is also a very good idea - most viruses that infect your computer from the internet love hiding out here. Temp File Cleaner does a great job (cleans out even prefetch). I'm always pleasantly surprised at how much hard disk space it frees up,especially when I'm about to run out of space.

Oh,and all the software I've mentioned is freeware,top-notch stuff

Not sure if you will come across this, but I am interested in finding out where I can buy a Toshiba S.battery in Nbo.
Mine is exactly 2 years and showing HDU symptoms, Guess it's life time is up.
Would appreciate contacts or directions.

And have a partition with Linux, mine is Debian. Gets around Windows bugs when one needs to.
