My laptop,Toshiba,has of late been slow,

You open a document,you wait for 4 minutes to open...........

when you close a document,its like its pulling a polithene sheeting over your VDU,



what could be the broblem?

Specs: Toshiba Setllight Pro,duo core,512MB Ram,Bought 2007 blah blah............

virus. format and re-install - if you can,back up files to a flash - then after re-install Windows/etc and office,make sure you install an up to date AV (try avira) & for firewall try Comodo - its also free (google both) - do that prior to connecting to the internet AND prior to restoring files to HDD. Modem disconnect could mean your system is being hacked and Safcom server detecting unusual connections so it closes the port,etc.

1. First you need to update your system with windows patches

for this go to windows update here: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Follow the on screen prompts. Ensure your system is uptodate with the latest updates.

If your windows is fake,(not genuine) this may not work for you.

2. Install an anti-virus e.g Mcafee or Norton. You may need to purchase this. You can also download a free version of anti-virus e.g AVG anti virus found here: http://free.avg.com/ww-en/homepage

3. Do not visit websites with questionable content,e.g pornographic websites that have popups and all kinds of windows opening. This are most likely avenues of virus delivery.

If your system is so slow that you can't do anything,try reboot the system.

Immediately before the windows logo appears,hit f8 repeatedly unil a menu shows up. In this menu select 'safe mode with networking'. Then hit enter which will boot windows in safemode. After this proceed to step 1 above.

To revert back to normal mode,just reboot and do nothing.

Wish i could assist you,If you are in within Nairobi. Am a net Admin and would happily give you a solution without TKK... You can use freeware called defragler from piriform.com and also Ccleaner from the same vendor.I normally use the to my satisfaction and the good thing they are free.
