I doubt there is a book that will help – parenting is a natural instinct

Yeaaaah. I know.

Being a parent to a teenager is so very challenging.

It is a stage he/she is going through.

Did you expect she would be daddy's little girl or mummy's baba for the rest of your life?

I found the following informative

1. 7 Habits of highly effective people-There are parts that talk about communication, moreso communication with children

2. Gordon Neufeld-His DVDs are awesome! Getting into a childs head and introspectively into yours too. I got this while looking up bullying, but I put it as a must watch for people who interact with each other, especially with children.

3. The two 'Classic Educational shorts' How to be a man and how to be a woman. One of the best educational videos your children will watch and learn from. Very old videos '70s but the messages are priceless

4. Children needs to watch and learn videos on the importance of eating right(good healthy food and how to eat it), exercise etc and get to see how diseases come about. Videos on STDs and AIDs are a must watch like the one Tuju made. I've looked for it to no avail.

5. The most important 'book' is the Bible. Written, Audio and Video. If your child can have all the Christian movies ever made like the new series 'The Bible', twould be swell

the books from the west won't help you much, start spending more time with people who have raised kids, the best education you can get is by accumulating as much from the real life experiences and hope you will be prepared to encounter the same.

though they always find a new unique thing to test you with.

From experience no book prepares you for parenting. As someone said above look for parents who have experience. There is a wealth of knowledge there! Start with your parents.

i tend to agree with you. the status of children of the west indicates the 'efficacy' of those books.

My advice to you being a father of two kids, don't be academic in your parenting because you're not raising robots. If God has given you children, he has equipped you with all you need. It's automatic and all children are unique in a way only their parents can understand.

Oh but you could get these books so you can know what to watch out for in your child:
1. What to expect when you are expecting (which I think you have)
2. What to expect the first year.

BBI will solve it

Something I remember from Gordon Neufeld
1. Reward system. Parents have this thing about rewarding good behavior. But what is its effect? Reward is a form of manipulation. No one, least of all a child wants to be manipulated. Once they realize that, kwisha wewe. He talked about sex, what if you paid your spouse after every touchdown? Would it motivate him/her to engage in more future coitus? Prostitutes don't look forward to aviation.
2. Every action having a similar and opposite reaction. What is the reaction of a child after telling him/her to do something? He equated that to, how do you feel when you tell yourself you will do something. Don't you immediately feel resistance? How then do you get yourself, someone, a child to do something whilst not encountering any resistance?

Boss, I learnt things I've never thought of.

Teach your children how to read. I don't mean the academic stuff, there are a lot of books on adventure, discovery eg mountains, continents, stuff under the sea etc. then depending on age, you can read together and discuss as a family. Helps you bond with the kids and they know that you are always available for any questions. You can also buy bible stories that are age specific at Text Book Centre and Christian Bookshops and do simple Bible Stories in the evenings with them. This will help you avoid tension filled TV with so much politics.

Buy cookery books and learn how to make stuff with them like pizza. these are small activities that help parents get close to children and you are able to 'listen' to a child then.
Another good place to get second hand books is Toi Market, next to Winners Chapel, you'll be amazed at the stuff they have for Kshs100 each. With Kshs 1,000 you can get 10 books per month and build a home library polepole.
I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me: Phil 4: 13
