Djiin, My only experience on your itenary is Gilgil-Nyahururu,70kms,a few potholes but genarally tou can do over 80kms/hr.........I did not have a breakdown though I safely drove through the road vusiku!!!! The chief value of money lies in the fact that one lives in a world in which it is overestimated. ..."Wewe ni mtu mdogo sana....na mwenye amekuandika pia ni mtu mdogo sana!".

@Djinn, By de-touring,you'll have added approximately 160kms to your journey......You wouldn't do that unless you have a petrol station in your backyard ...-:).It isn't that scary, besides, you get to know your country.BTW,from Nairobi, you need not get to Nyeri on your way to Nanyuki. There is a turn off after Karatina that takes you to Kiganjo.....Bon voyage. Old man about town.... Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

@Djinn; Interesting....I've always thought of publishing and annual road map with colour codes indicating road conditions.....but always wondered whether Kenyans use maps when they travel.....and collecting the data could be tiresome..... Behind the gardens...Behind the wall...Under the tree (Including: Red...Dark Blue...Yellow) Nothing is real unless it can be named; nothing has value unless it can be sold; money is worthless unless you spend it.

@mukiha - you may be onto something - I'm thinking more of an online GIS based map - perhaps a chat with KRB and perhaps with support of Google (they have a local office - Purshottam place in Westlands) may result in some form of PPP where you play a lead role - then perhaps tie in,at the periphery, ministries like transport, tourism, etc. And why stop there? if this can be well supported, and be based on GIS data, perhaps include the police (black spots, danger zones, etc). It would be a really useful resource for many different groups (local tourists, tour firms, transporters, police,KRB,etc etc) - revenue? location based adverts (lodges, hotels, petrol stations, supermarkets, spare shops, etc - basically what most people may look for when on the road). With more mobile devices being used to access the web,and with google maps available for most mobile phones, and with BTS based triangulation where GPS is absent, the reach can be great). And it can be interactive and updated real time (unlike publishing where you need to revise and reprint - of course the IP will not be respected and people will make copies)
The problem with equality is that we desire that it be with those that have more than us rather that those that have less

@guka,the nanyuki turn off just b4 nyeri inaitwa MARÙA. And 48km is the distance fm kiganjo junction to Nyk. Fm Nyeri CBD it cant be less than 60km. @djinn,when going to nyk fm either nbi or nyahu,u dnt go thr nyeri town unless by choice. i.e nbi-karatina-marùa junction-nyk; or nyahu-king'ong'o junction-kiganjo junction-nyk. Basically, there's a seriously complicated road network around nyeri town. But generally, its gud to knw the major roads converging 'around' the town: fm othaya, nbi, nyahu n nyk. Can silence be misquoted? TULIA.........UFUNZWE!

@djinn-for easy search, perhaps you could edit the title to mention something along the lines of road condition/road map/cross-country/etc

@ Djinn,
The Kericho - Kisumu- Busia stretch is still the better option. The potholes from Yala to Busia were filled up by compacted soil and the impact on body and shocks greatly reduced. Unfortunately the Kericho Kisumu stretch is showing signs of flaking off (shoddy workmanship) but still okay
We tenda wema kisha wende zako. Usinipe macho ya kutarajia shukrani!!!

@Djinn, -Nakuru-Mau Summit.....Crazy and dusty diversions just before Sachangwan......You will want to cry.Your other option is to carry your bijuti on the back of a hummer. -Mau Summit-Makutano. (The Kaleos call it Mau simiti).....More diversions....crap. -Timboroa-Matharu-Burnt forest......You will want to walk. -Chimoi hill (Just before Webuye)....Kindly drive on the wrong side of the road unless you want to leave your gearbox/Sump in the middle of the road.(You are not that philanthropic) -Kibabi-Amagoro...Have two mechanics and a towing truck. Option one. Nakuru-Kisumu via Njoro/Molo then straight to Busia. Option two (If you are an adventurer). Same route but look out for a left turn at Ebuyangu (Second shopping centre after Luanda) which takes you to Ekero .....Turn left to Mumias then Nzoia river bridge.Turn to your left again at Mayoni and off to Busia via Nambale.....Stretch between Shititwi and Ekero (5Kms) is not yet done while the rest of the road is tandika ulale.Be careful of cane trailers and boda bodas and also watch out for the unfinished River Yala bridge just after Khumsalaba. If it's at night, keep off. Option two is faster but longer by about 20 to 30 Kilometres and in my opinion option one remains the best unless you know your way very well......Bon voyage once more. Old man about town.... Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

Its been a year since I went to wesdan by road. Then, the maili tisa webuye section was badly CRACKED,ready 4potholes,bt the worst was huge bucketholes in the middle of nowhere,n nobody cared to repair them. Imagine doing 150 then out of the blues a huge deep pot spanning accross 3q of the rd! Anyway, that was then. The chimoi escarpment that drags ua vehicle rait into nzoia esp kama brake pads ni tumabati wololo! That mteremko is about 2km,n bumpy as hell...Beba a few floaters,u mait need them in the river hehehe Njaamba nditù! TULIA.........UFUNZWE!
