"Which scientific/literary events?"Unless your name is an acronym or a mnemonic, which I doubt, it comes from two giants. One of science and one of science fiction. I would bet it is the former. That is all I am saying. "The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement. But the opposite of a profound truth may well be another profound truth." (Niels Bohr)

To perceive, two beings have to communicate, I assume (could be wrong).
So trees are beings then.
But this raises another question.
There are many entities we do not really understand? Does that mean they are not 'beings?'
I was born on the slopes of a mountain and for many years I could swear the mountain called to me - still does. I know people who swear the sea, their country etc calls to them.
Are all these 'beings?'
To perceive you only need a being and the object to be observed.Thats what I think. No,it doesn't mean they are not 'beings'. 'Beings' could be anything and everywhere,we just don't have the tools or methods of seeing them let alone understanding them. That's why I can't dispute what you've said could be possible. The only way would be to know the truth. Uncertainty is certain.Let go

"No,it doesn't mean they are not 'beings'. 'Beings' could be anything and everywhere,we just don't have the tools or methods of seeing them let alone understanding them."So the Universe is a being, then? What exactly is it 'being?' After all 'being' is a verb not a noun. What is a 'being' 'being'?
Elsewhere you said, 'the only thing we can't doubt is our 'self' (human beings)'. Does that mean we are locked in a state of perpetual being? So what exactly are we being? And why the heck is it so hard? Sorry to ask so many questions. I am really that ignorant "The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement. Life is hard. But sometimes its how you take it. I have come to appreciate the simple things in life and I find it beautiful. i doubt anyone can say what the universe exactly is. But i don't think its a being. By being I mean things with consciousness, like human beings have. I believe we are in a perpetual state of being but that leaves so many interesting possibilities Uncertainty is certain.Let go

The loonies are making steady progress. Who will fish them out from the ever deepening depth they are sinking into? I cannot take myself to their depths. I cannot go into that bin. "By being I mean things with consciousness, like human beings have. I believe we are in a perpetual state of being but that leaves so many interesting possibilities"There you go again. Losing me with long words. What is consciousness? Is it a quality limited to only to human-beings? Do tree-beings, rock-beings, water-beings, fire-beings etc have consciousness? "Can I be allowed to do this in a different thread? I intend to start one on 'Post Modern Cosmology' maybe tomorrow?"Yes you can Tycho. Let me know when the thread is up. I look forward to reading your proof of space and time. "The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement. But the opposite of a profound truth may well be another profound truth." There you go again. Losing me with long words.
What is consciousness?
Is it a quality limited to only to human-beings?
Do tree-beings, rock-beings, water-beings, fire-beings etc have consciousness?
Consciousness is awareness of your will.Anything that is aware of its will is conscious. Uncertainty is certain.Let go

ChessMaster wrote:Impunity wrote:Do trees register pain? How? This is not philosophy but i just want to share it- Quote:Every stroke of those pruning shears could have the average shrub writhing in agony. Researchers in Bonn, Germany, found plants give off a gas when under 'attack'. Super-sensitive microphones picked up a 'bubbling' sound from a healthy plant. But this rose to a piercing screech when it was under threat. Even a tiny insect bite could have an effect. 'The more a plant is subjected to stress, the louder the signal,' said Dr Frank K¸hnemann. Plants do not actually scream in pain. But different sounds are heard when the gas they emit, ethylene, is bombarded with lasers. The research could help to work out which pieces of fruit and vegetables are likely to stay fresh longer, as a cucumber which is starting to go off produces a squealing sound. It could then be separated from the fresher ones. Fruit exporters are already showing interest in the research. Wolfgang Praetorius, of Cologne- based Fruchthansa, said: 'Individual pieces of fruit could be tested after being harvested. We'd know which ones to ship together.' D r K ¸ h n e m a n n believes plants give off ethylene to warn others of an 'attack'. He said: 'Perhaps plants and trees are 'talking to each other.'
