KILLER BRAKES:
I sat close to
truck drivers at a restaurant on the
Nairobi-Mombasa highway, and was
shocked to hear them discussing the
Kilima Kiu, a black spot section of
the road. When descending the long
stretch and they discover the truck’s
brakes are failing or have failed, they
said, they cannot ditch the truck in
the valley, since one would certainly
die. Rather stop it using an on coming small vehicle, they whispered. It
sent a chill down my spine since I
had a small car and heading that direction. Some accidents are caused.

Very few people are this cold blooded. In an emergency such as brakes failure on a steep stretch, natural instinct takes over and the driver, in the face of a grisly death, may not be himself. . .

I wish the problem was only with failed brakes. Many long distance truck drivers have scant respect for the lives of other road users. Just see how the join major highways from feeder roads. The guy will just drive right in front of oncoming traffic, safe in the knowledge that if you are driving a small car and you hit him, you and your car will very likely die, and he will not even get a scratch!

So are buses on Nairobi-Nakuru highway ...the guy just goes to opposite lane and flashes lights at you, leave the road or die. Last year I was forced off the road twice by buses, the undercarriage of the car went to eat grass huko at Delamere's ranch,..it was just sheer luck the road shoulder was not severely banked. My passengers were severely traumatized. Traffic police should do something about these reckless drivers.
