... that as Kenyans we agree or disagree in all issues, not all along tribal lines but one, politics? Why can't we sober up and shed the tribal angle we always view our politicians cum leaders, thus giving them opportunity to divide us so that they make their bread and butter? I wonder if there is any scholar in Kenya who has ever decided do to do some serious research on this front!!

The political and economic structures that have prevailed have favored the race and tribe as the base for interaction and growth.

Take for example, the premise that the nation state has to increase her GNP with the view of stabilizing herself by providing optimal employment and increasing the size of the middle class. The effect of this has been imperialism and its other effects like Colonialism.

Take the Kenyan example, from the effects of settling in the White highlands it was inevitable that not only would the Kikuyu be at the frontline of the struggle for independence, but it also followed that the tribe should be at the base of government after independence.

Nationalism has unfortunately always fostered tribalism.

Speak for yourself. Some of us view politics as a minor source of amusement. We do not disagree on political matters. We just go vote on the material date and return to our daily grind.

Right now we are celebrating the sterling perfomance by our rugby boys. Everyone is seeing that Kenya won. Not that a few Luos,or a few Luhyas, or any other tribe in the team. We r seieing Kenya! Wish it was this way in all aspects!

I have asked this for a long time and the answer that keeps popping up is this.. The day Kikuyus vote in large numbers (not necessarily majority) for someone other than one of their own... Then that will be a game changer.

Add 1992 and 1997 to that. In all the elections they have been runners up and when absent we saw what happened in 2007.

But they always present strong candidates and have a lot to protect, learnt lessons the hard way in the 80's and 90's.

That's the only reason someone out of Central will have no chance of clinching the presidency, unless they get a puppet outside the region. Most candidates are always strong! So it's not an issues of central candidates being strong! Do you remember there was one time they said they can vote in a dog in Jubilee/TNA but not a human being in CORD/ODM? That's most reckless statement I have heard in this campaign and it's a reflection that their candidates are never that strong, they just have blind masses behind them, RAO included!

Now Kikuyus not voting other tribes they have become tribalists?so its only Kikuyus who are tribalists in Kenya? @Urstil you start a thread asking people not to view politics from a tribalistic perspective and then you go ahead to propagate the same.very hypocritical indeed.

You are the problem. Why do you see someone as a Kikuyu first?

The day we will be bold enough to accept we have been tribal, is the day Kenya will have the giant leap.
Otherwise why is it a candidate is always expected to get more votes from their tribe?
WHY? Ukabila.

Go and vote whether you are voting for issues or tribesman. at end of the day there will be a winner and a loser and we will NEVER stop being Luo, Kikuyu, Luhya, Kamba, Kisii and all. What we need is tollerance such that if one person from a another tribe that has wronged you, you need to deal with the individual and not treat it as if it is the whole tribe that has done that. This is where tribalism starts - bulkanization.

First of all I agree with you tolerance and acceptance is the key. Just one thing I differ with slightly. Tribes teach culture to individuals and as such people from the same tribe will have similar cultural views and behaviours. Though not all.At some point I believe tribes clash because of culture and we don't have a strong national cultural identity that identifies with all Kenyans as individuals.
